Small Caliber Ramrod Drilling Perplexity
« on: January 20, 2021, 05:00:27 PM »
The other threads lately on this subject got me realizing i need to get cracking on this first .29 hurdle I have to overcome. I have the 3 standard ramrod bits but nothing that will bore the hole for my upcoming .29 build. Can someone point me to where a bit can be bought or custom ordered for the project? What do you guys do for sub .32 stuff when you are doing the barrel and ramrod channel yourself?

I'm near Smithville, between Nashville and Chattanooga. I think these were from MBS but I don't recall.

I always make my own by welding a bit to a piece of drill rod. I did break one one time that I welded. Now I get a buddy who's a pro welder to weld em' up and don't think I could break em' if I tried.

Not what you're asking I know but may be your best option.

That is sort of what I'm asking as an ALR buddy who is a pro welder making me one up is an ideal outcome.  ;)

I think you'll need a custom made extension for a 1/4" bradpoint.

A good welder can make you what you need. I have had several made over the years. But, in using them, you must withdraw often to prevent clogging. Manufactured long drill bit have the fluting all the way to the top. Made ones do not.

I like the gun drill style. Any machine shop should be able to make one https://www.trackofthewolf.com/List/Item.aspx/1042/1

Make one from a piece of rod, shape the tip like a 1/4" Spade bit. This one worked fine for me, clamp it up good, lube it up good, go slow, maybe a 1/2" at a time and clean out after each cut. Takes some time but t works. I have 5/16 and 3/8ths made the same way.

This should work. 48 inch drill bit. You can get it in size down to 1/4 inch.
