I’m thinking of making one to put on my Jim Chambers English Sporting Rifle with one sight fixed and one folding, so any photos or ideas would be greatly appreciated whether you made your own or just have photos.

You might get some ideas if you look at NECG, New England Custom guns. These would be for modern guns but they might give you some food for thought. Just Google them and you can find photos.

I made a rifle several years ago that emulates the work of Jacob Kuntz. One of his rifles has a folding leaf rear sight that looked to me like I could duplicate. So I hack-sawed and filed it out of solid stock, and it turned out great. But to this day, I have never used the leaf, so I don't know where it puts the ball or at what range?
I have a book called "The Modern Gunsmith" by James V. Howe, in which he describes and illustrates how folding leaf sights are made. That was a serious leg-up when it came time to make one.

The first image is the original from a reference photograph, and the other two are of the one I made.

According to Forsyth, the folding sights on the English double guns of the mid 1800's, had all folding. Elevation for the point blank shooting, ie: from breech
to the front bead, was given by the larger breech of the gun. I find with mine, the boss of the base gives the necessary elevation for point blank shooting
and is equal to the first leaf, if raised. Thus, with the hunting load, I can shoot to about 110yards without raising a leaf. The other 2 leafs are set for 150
and 200yards.

Here are a couple pics of one Ed Wenger used on a recent Germanic Hunting Rifle. I'm pretty sure these came from TOW years ago.
I know that Ed said he was trying to buy some for future use but they were always out of stock.

Thank you all for the photos and thoughts. Using the search function, unfortunately, a lot of the photos are missing.i have both volumes of Howe’s The Modern Gunsmith and I was looking through it the other night but somehow missed the making of a folding leaf sight. I’ll look again.

Taylor, I found the rear sight info in Howe’s book...the pages are real thin and I flipped two pages missing it the first time. Tim thanks for those pics of the rear sight.

Great video and proof again that the round ball is still a great hunting projectile . Would love to know more about the rifle, what barrel maker,twist, lock etc.
