Re-worked Haversack
« on: January 26, 2021, 07:28:12 AM »
I spent this past weekend customizing my haversack. It started out as a plain canvas commercial model that I bought a few years ago from Townsends (I think).

Anyway, I added a leather bottom, covered the flap with leather, replaced the canvas webbing strap with leather, and a nice brass buckle for adjustment. I also replaced the pewter buttons with brass ones, to match the strap buckle. 2-3 ounce veg tan cowhide on the bag, 4-5 ounce veg tan strap, dyed saddle tan with Fiebings Pro Dye.

I’ve been meaning to make me a nice haversack, but this one will have to do until I find the perfect material to make a new one from scratch.

Very nice Greg!

I like the stitching on the flap, as well as the color of the leather.

Thanks for sharing.

Regards,

Doug

The whole thing looks super Greg.  You'll enjoy using that one.  Nice stitching.  Your stamp is really cool.  God Bless,   Marc

That's a nice job on that one Greg. What are the dimensions of your haversack and where did you get that buckle ?

Thanks for all the kind words, fellers!  Sometimes my hare-brained projects work out, and sometimes I just make a mess!  Seems like I can never leave well enough alone.

Frank, it’s about 14” square, and I got the buckle from Richard Lanni in Florida. He casts some very nice buckles...you can find him on Facebook, I don’t think he has a website.

Thanks Greg, I see some of the guys walking around at the CLA show carrying haversacks and I have often thought about making one. They are handy to carry all your loot in. I'll be sure to check out Mr. Richard Lanni I really like that style of buckle.
Kind Regards

That haversack seems pretty good to me.  I don't know how you would improve it.

The workmanship is first rate. If it were mine, I would dunk it all in walnut hull stain, let it drip dry. And finish up with an application of snowseal on everything, heated with a hair dryer as I went.  That would tame the “new” look, and take it to the next level - in my opinion.

Thanks!  I’ve already been scheming on what to do about the “new” look...no walnut stain for me this year, we had a late killing frost and completely lost our local black walnut crop.  I have been thinking about a tea bath, and treat with beeswax...but I have a tin of Sno Seal too, so we’ll see. Of course, by the time I drag it through the mountains hunting turkeys and mushrooms this spring, I might not need to do anything to it!  I do sincerely appreciate the ideas, I’m always trying to do better!
