Fashion a nice copper or brass belly plate. Tack it in and age it like an original. Many had them.

Terry,You could just finish as is. I've seen some modern builds left that way. Tim

Agreed, good solution and many original rifles had them

All,

Looks like that hole is way off from the center line of the bottom. That ramrod hole was drill way off to be poking out the side of the rifle. Would plugging the hole and re drilling be an option?

Maybe a harder wood plug but that is only a guess based on the drill
following the path of least resistance. If the rod will move in and out
as it should the idea of a copper or brass patch or finish as is should be
an acceptable cure.It IS a "barn gun" and not a copy of the Grant Rifle ;D

Just had this happen myself. I'm just putting a wear plate on. I was freaked out initially but now I think the wear plate is gonna "fit" and look really good with the rest of the build.

At first I completely plugged the original ramrod hole with dowel I made from a piece of stock cutoff. I glued it in with titebond 3 and redrilled...the drill just followed the original hole so I didn't try that again.

How soft is the discolored area? If it's  at all  hard, I'd just go and  apply a stain that's  close and  apply finish. .....Fred

Fred; what your looking at it the r/r/ hole, i' knew the r/r channel was off, its my fault, but i carried on with the build. didn't think it was that close the the surface.  wanted to 1"1/4 but sanded to far and now i have a problem. i'm a little discussed and looking for a cure. do you have an idea?

I'd make a wear plate out of sheet steel about .0325" to 040" thick.  Don't go fancy, just so it covers the opening, and has enough room for some fine nails to hold it in place.

Here's one I did on a longrifle at the other end of the rod hole where the wood was so thin it collapsed.

I know that a wear plate from brass or iron is historically correct, but for the one repair that I did for a friend , I heat bent a thin piece of hard maple and glued it over the hole, then feathered the edges . The repair piece was probably only 2 mm thick when I started and less after clean up and sanding etc.
It shows as an obvious repair , same as the wear plates, but it's not cold on your hand in hunting season as the metals are. The repair was on the balance point of the rifle of this was a factor my friend wanted taken into consideration. It actually looks pretty nice .

I once owned an old percussion shotgun that was given to me as a kid it wasn't worth much but could be shot. It had a brass wear plate on it that was loose so I took it off to see what it was. Under it there was about a 3" long slice similar to what was shown by Yip but not in the same location. The stock was walnut and back then I use to collect pieces of old furniture from the dump that I use to carve. I squared off the slice then cut a piece of walnut from scrap to fit the slice and glued it in. The piece filled the ramrod hole partially. I went to the hardware store and purchased a long drill bit that matched the ramrod hole and re-drilled it. Shaved down the glued in piece and then took a mixture of boiled linseed oil mixed with japan dryer and applied that to the whole stock over a period of time and eventually it looked pretty good. You could tell if you looked at it closely but I thought it looked better than the brass plate it replaced.

Yip,
Unfortunately I was a teenager then living at home and using my dads shop and didnt take pictures. That was close to 50 years ago and I no longer have that shotgun. But if it were my build I would probably do the same thing I described. I would square it off to say whatever the max width is so I could cut a piece square on a tablesaw or a bandsaw and using files get a perfect fit. As I remember doing that shotgun I had to widen the slice so I could get enough wood to glue to and once cleaned up and drilled out what is left of the patch is a fragment. I used wood glue back then I might use super glue now though. I think a lot depends on how thin the wood is and how much you have to glue to.

By the way, I shot that shotgun a lot and use to take in salt marshes and I never had any issues with that patch.

Sorry, it wasn't my gun, so it's long gone.  Think of the brass plate repair, only with a maple veneer.

I think the simplest and most believable solution as Taylor suggested is a sheet steel wear plate.
There is a rifle at Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York that has a brass wear plate pretty much like the last one that Bob Mc Bride shows. That rifle was made by Jacob Kuntz. If it was good enough for Kuntz, it would be good enough for me.

Just a thought, I don't know you were going with the rifle, as in the final product but you could leave the hole and finish the rest of it as a well used gun. I've seen guns with ware holes like that caused by carrying it across a saddle.

PS: Or you could send it to Eric K. and let him do his thing with it ;D TC

I like the wear plate.  I think in many cases it becomes an attractive added feature instead of a "mistake cover."  I also wonder if some were added in the day to prevent wear versus covering a wear hole?

i think i fixed the problem, i think this is not the place to say this  but i used a thin coat of Aqua Glass, i also made up a brass wear plate out of .035 brass if it didn't work, so lets see if it holds up

Or perhaps wrap it with rawhide?

As Clint would say...."a man has to know his limitations". I think this hobby is one where experimenting is all part of the learning experience. I don't think you offended anyone Zip.
