Tightening group size
« on: February 12, 2021, 07:23:04 PM »
Putting off experimenting with new possible patch lubes for a bit, 24 below again right now with no signs of warming for a week.   I've seen almost everything used as a patch lube hoping to cut fouling and or improve accuracy and it got me to thinking,  Has anyone tried patches lubed with Preparation H to shrink groups.   Just a idea, like I said it's too cold out for much else.

Never know, people try about every possible thing for patch lube and always are trying to invent something new.  This could possibly turn out to be the new " Bore Butter".

I think I'd be a bit afraid to use the Prep H as a patch lube.  Pretty soon, your bore would change from a .54 to a .17, and ramrods for a .17 are rather difficult to obtain.
I am sticking with my tin of mink oil.

What about Preparations "A" through "G"?  I guess they fell by the wayside; too bad, they may have worked quite well.  :o

Do you remember several years ago there was an article in Muzzle Blasts on lubes. Several of the boughten lubes were awful, with saliva, tap water and URINE placing very high.

Saliva does work very well and I used it for years back in my early days.

Are we still talking rifles here Hanshi lol.    Spit patches work great on the range but I never recommend them for hunting or storage.  I don't want a patch drying out or if I want to pull the ball I want a lubed patch.

Long time friend of ours used brandy for patch lube. He always put them in his mouth, before loading though.
He used them for bunny hunting and ringed (rusted) his barrel at the ball seat location.

Years ago I would have fair luck with spit patch but tried straight water and had real poor results.

Yep, we're talking rifles and it (spit patch) also would have to be used at the range.  It can also be used in the deer bush, but as you correctly pointed out, It doesn't pay to leave a load like that in the bore more than a short while.

Seriously, I used prep h once at our range to lube patches,  and never heard the end of it til covid. mmmmmmmm :-* :-*

Of the few times I have used Prep H there was no way I was going to measure the group.
