Like the title says. I'm looking for insight from those who've either built or owned or both, the Jim Chambers Mark Silver Virginia rifle. I've done a pretty good job talking myself into wanting one and know that his kits are top notch. I've owned a York built from one of his kits and enjoyed it. For those who chime in, I'd be interested to know the following: Has it a more favorable feel in .58 or .62? Does anyone know if it's possible to get it with a barrel longer than 42"

I have one in .54. It is a little heavy. I like the big bores. I would get a .62 and use a heavily patched .595 ball, but either one would work.

I had a 58 and thought it handled well, balenced well and the lock was a great sparked and a lot faster than some would think for a larger lock. Great hunting rifle but 42 inch is the only barrel length IIRC

EC121- I didn't know they could be had in .54cal. I already shoot a .54 GPR, so that wouldn't be much more "stuff". Care to post pictures? All inspiration is welcome.

Hi Woods runner, I let it go because I was offered a good price And it enabled or funded another build. I have put together five different Chambers kits and that Virginia was one of my favorite.

Here are the pictures of my .54. It was built by Robert Ray. You might see a ding or two in the pics. It was my hog rifle for a while.

EC121- Rifles are ment to be used. Otherwise, they're just like my grandmother's fine china. Pretty to look at, but not to eat from.

That's a beautiful gun BTW.

Woodsrunner: I replied to your PM. For the rest of you, I love my Chamber's Mark Silver Virginia rifle, so much so that Ive just ordered another barrel for it. I bought my rifle in .50 cal on special order...same barrel dimensions, just more steel. I'm starting to find the ten pound rifle a little tiring at 72 years old, so I've ordered a new .60 cal barrel for the old girl. Looking forward to it.

I have one in .58.
Got it as a kit.
Wouldn't trade it for any other rifle. Lock is brilliant fast.
Put a wooden patch box lid on mine, this being an early rifle.
I wouldn't want a longer barrel than 42" as it's a handy length, and easy to carry.
Had it since sometime in the 90's I think.
Brought lots of meat home with it.

Boy! A .60 or .62 would make a lightweight carrying rifle.

I call mine "Voluptuous Virginia", and like Pukka Bundook, favour this rifle over all my others when I want a reliable, fast, accurate and dependable rifle. I shoot it better than any other rifle, including my .62 cal Hawken percussion.

Herb- nice goup. I see most of these being built with metal patchboxes. Is it more correct for the period. In truth, I have no love for metal patchboxes. I like wooden ones or none at all.

I built one for a customer some years ago. If I’m not mistaken it was in 62 cal. It had the sliding wood box option. I’m glad I didn’t get to shoot it, I’m sure I’d have wound up getting myself a kit rather than my milling machine. BJH

Woodsrunner- I don't know about the patch box. I think this came with the parts. Others here can advise you if a wooden patch box lid is proper.

That is a fine looking rifle with very refined lines, carving and engraving. May I ask how much was the asking price.

I have one in .58 I built myself. I've never handled a .62, but I can't imagine anything handling much better than this rifle.

I'd say a rifle of this style, lock, and location would be very likely to have had a wooden sliding lid.
Not saying they don't look well with a metal lid, but being early these rifles are Fine with wood.
Maybe run it by Jim, but think in his catalogue, the rifle has wood.
