12 ga turkey gun in waiting mode, I heard him coming, shifted my gun barrel about 6" to be on track, silence, he left.

12ga, 38" Colerain D weight barrel, jug choked full by Caywood, walnut wood from Dunlap, full sized plans and furniture from TOW and an English round face lock from Chambers.

16 ga, cylinder bore, 44" barrel, taken four turkeys and 8pt and a doe with this one.

20 ga Armstrong, 42" Colerain full choke, one so far with this one but it's a more recent build.

.62/20 ga full jug choke by Kevin Blevins, my first smooth bore. Had a blast hunting grouse last fall and looking forward to turkey very soon.

Personally I would prefer something between 16 and 10 bore. 11 seems just about right, for some reason.

Daryl,
For a sporting gun in the UK, it appears about a 14 bore was the most popular.
Normally not firing a ball, but still not rare to do so.

Hi Richard,
It is rust blued but rubbed back to give it a bit more translucence like fire bluing. The secret, other than rubbing back, was the highly polished metal surface and then very slow rusting and frequent carding.

Daryl, On the gun I posted, in stead of a sight I filed a groove in the standing breach, seems to work real good. I broke a couple fingers and had to cut my wedding band off. Thats' it just ahead of the breach, hah!

I have made them with sights though, well, usually.

I ran a smoothbore competition that consisted of equal numbers of gongs and clays. By my observations, the guns with rear sights were only slightly better on the gongs (one target difference) and much worse on the clays. If you can anchor your cheek consistently on the stock rear sights are not needed.

Almost ashamed to join in on this thread with everyone's posts showing amazing artistic gun work. Mine is ordinary, nothing special and as plain as your second cousin's ugly sister. But it does evermore shoot and makes targets I'm proud of. Rear sight, 20 ga. (tight), 38" long. I don't hunt upland small game except maybe turkey on occasion. I use it mainly for deer and it loves round ball. The rear sight even works for shot.

This is an H Whall 11 bore (.750"), made in the 50's, through maybe 1870's I assume. I used it at Hefley Creek Rendezvous perhaps 10years ago
winning the trap shoot and placing second in a trail walk shooting thickly patched .724"balls(Tanner Mould).
The breech, just ahead of the bolster on this gun is just over 1 1/4" across the flats, yet it points amazingly fast.

13 5/8"- it fits very nicely. The weight is smack dab between your hands. The swing is very fast for such a long barrel (36").
It needs a new barrel as this one is fairly rough & takes a great deal of cleaning. Sure shot well, though. There's lots of meat
for a re-bore in most of the barrel, but not at the muzzle. It would be a shame to "Bobbit".

Here are a couple photos. The New England fowling gun is from a Chambers kit. It is an awesome hunting gun. The other gun is a 20 bore with a 38 in Colerain barrel. and is great for fast handling in the woods. Mainly used for partridge , and sometimes deer, it has mostly wooden construction and no buttplate.

Also added this ....a "carbine " poacher's gun. .62 smoothbore , 13 in barrel
