16 guage steel.....1/2 inch wide and 3 1/2 inch long.....1/8 inch peep hole...or 9/64.... just bend it up like in the photos in this thread. ....and file away. Adjust height with the prying of a screw driver blade...and knock it down with a Hammah if needed. He said that one sight doesn’t fit all....he prefers to have the gun ,for proper fitment. He also uses fishing line ...from the top of the front blade ...to the center of the peep hole...for a rough line of setting the rear peep height

Don't use 1/8" steel like I did, making the bends was a real pain with a map gas torch, particularly getting the sight to conform to the bend of the tang.

I never though of running a string from the front sight to the peep to get in the ball park, good idea.

OK, just called a buddy who has some 16 gauge steel. For the guys that have done this, did you have to get a longer tang screw?

I don’t think so....also ,Lowell suggested NOT to counter sink the mounting hole.

As a practice piece and to see how well it might work I used a hacksaw blade to make a similar sight. Didn't even need to drill the aperture hole. In this case it is mounted on a half stock rifle as opposed to a smoothbore. Will continue to play with the hacksaw sight as well as try some other materials just to see if they can be used successfully. I have some 1/2 inch width brass stock I will try.

But, if making and installing a semi-permanent replacement,
Does one leave an existing rear sight in situ, or remove and fill with a blank?

I wouldn't remove the existing rear sight unless the view through the peep caused the existing rear sight to hide the front sight. All my other rifles that have a peep do not cause a problem.

On this rifle I did have to remove the rear sight to see the front sight. It is one I picked up at an auction and it has never been shot so I had no concerns about removing the rears sight to see if it was practical. If the aperture sits higher due to sight construction or the stock/tang or barrel profile and/or the rear sight is low enough it it may not be necessary.

If you compare the hacksaw sight to the previously posted sight the attachment hole is nearer the end of the sight and the sight curves further down the tang. If it is for a smoothbore as requested in the original post a rear sight may not be an issue.

I may decide to try/use the hacksaw sight if I decide to keep and shoot this particular rifle. If not and I choose to sell it I will put the rear sight back in place.

I made one of these sights this week and shot today. Works great. I didn’t like just the one screw holding the sight on so I cut a dovetail to mount it.

Hey Stank.....what size hole did you drill ...for the peep hole ? Wondah if 1/16 is too small ?

simple rear peep ..cost 2 bucks..easy peesey lemon squeeze

using brass round head slotted screws (8 x 40) and drilled out brass rod (1/4")solider to screw head

file a round channel for the aperture to lay in...... then solider

make them tall, make them short, make the off set..your choice.

drill and tap center of tang..screw in done.

add washers for height-solider together..the brass will tarnish to a nice patina..

It's simple stupid.

This cap slapper required height due to a tall front sight.

The sight radius gained is worth the effort.

drill the aperture to any size

have one on my flint hunting rifle mounted 1 inch behind the flash pan...no issues.

Old Guys Take Notice.......

whitetails and squirrels hate them

42 inch sight radius...no rear sight interfering with rifle carry win-win.

These sights kept 63.5 year old eyes in the zone.

side note......... I prefer low front and rear sights...keeps my cheek planted...

Went to the range this morning....and what a successful outing ! That rear peep is the Bomb !! Only stayed for about 10 shots...but very impressed with the design and function !
