Finally received my copy of Randal Pierse's book, very nice!! True Covid relief! Inspired again to get started on a Soddy Daisy!! Yes my enthusiasm has waned because of the isolation.

.. this and the old Walter M. Cline book are the best available on TENNESSEE rifles at this time,... However,... Randal hopes to have his full color, hard cover book with over 200 TENNESSEE rifles published by Spring,... Hang in there,.... regards,... CCF

Mine too, Ken. I have on loan the J Nobel books on southern rifles, my Paperback Smoky Mtn rifles is like me, coming apart at the seam. Is ok, easier to lay out pics.
I have 5 Tenn style longrifles under way,been working on a 3/4 5o cal flinter today. If I didnt have this going on in shop, I might go sane.

My Nobles books are just a bunch of loose paper piles now. I should have ordered 2 of Rich's books because it will be the same way.

I'm starting a Soddy tomorrow. I hope Canadianml1 will keep me motivated. There seems to be some Soddy lovers on the board now.

Yes, Randal's book has been helpful to me too, informing my eyes and hands in my current build. He shipped mine promptly, nicely signed, 136/150. It is so helpful to see a variety of S. Mt. rifles, their similarities and differences too, that has given me inspiration and confidence to build my first rifle from a blank. With this good book, and all you journeymen, I can delight in being an apprentice who is learning a lot, and really enjoying this challenging pursuit.

Interesting how the current interest / projects flow here. I have a local friend that recently got a 1970s vintage Soddy made by a fellow in Zanesville ,Ohio.I havent seen it yet cause of our funky weather,covid, distance to his house. These old fellows are as unique as the smiths that built em, and the Mountaineers that used and enjoyed them. Dave

I also have on loan Tennessee Rifles by Robin Hale 1970 . A very good read. I am going to copy it for my records.

I too recently got a copy from Randal - great resource from a wonderful gentleman. For students of southern mountain rifles it is a must have book! Looking forward to his opus on the subject.

Thanks Ken. This is the paper I have in hand. A nice beginning look into the early days of these rifles renewed interest. My mentor is 11 years older than me, and was involved in these guns ,and Hawkens back then, and still is.

I can’t wait to see the hard bound book on Tennessee rifles by Randal Pierce coming this year. I’m not sure if the proofing of the book is completed yet.
His book on Kentucky Rifles of the Smoky Mountains is the best $25.00 I ever spent !

The barrel is in an ramrod hole done. Two to three hundred pounds of wood to take off yet. But it coming along.

My mother. 149/150. @!*%! I love that book. Having a hard time staying focused on jobs i need to finish. Am dying to
Start on a new mountain rifle for myself, only trouble is which style i wanna do, heh heh. Luckily i have barrels and stocks for several!
I ran across my cline and noble books yesterday, they are like sweet old friends... Will be spending time with the cline
Book soon, as i will be getting warmed up for a trip to the Three Forks of The Wolf for theYork shoot in March.

I'm also happy to hear Dana's announcement of a new Pierce book. His first one is great so can only imagine what the next will be.

Not so much a book on specifically southern rifles.
But lots of first hand lore from hunting and shooting in the south. Good old timey fotos and stories

Ken, that's the reason I started buying Two, one for the shop and one for the shelf. Besides, the way these things go somewhere down the line you will be able to sell one to pay for Two...maybe I should start buying Three

Gentlemen,

Randal Pierce and Kenneth Orr are working on a second book about SMR rifles with the Kentucky Rifle Foundation. The publishing date is undetermined at this time but hopefully this year. The book will be announced on the Foundation's website and Facebook page plus it will be posted on this site also. We are glad to see interest building for the book. I am sure it will be a great book with lots of newly photographed rifles and documentation.
