Forming an under rib

I’m wondering how the old timers made a metal under rib. Perhaps a length of iron strap would be forged in a die for hollow one? Filing one with the concave sides and groove for the rod seems labor intensive.

This under rib on an English Fowling Piece circa 1800 appears to have been formed from sheet steel. It was made in two pieces. You can see the seam if you look closely, next to the rr pipe. You can see how thin the steel was in the pic of the muzzle end . This end was filled with solder....Ed
