hand forged sprue cutter, Somerset County, PA
« on: February 22, 2021, 07:39:49 PM »
This antique hand forged sprue cutter is from one of the Lepley farms in Southampton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and was found in a bucket of old longrifle parts and gunsmithing tools. This is my first attempt at posting a picture, so I'm hoping for the best.

Dietle,

Thanks for sharing both the photo and the information about where this turned up.  Not something you see everyday.

I’ve never seen a sprue cutter that didn’t have arched jaws. It looks more like a wire cutter, or nail cutter for simple cut nails, or ticks.

Dan, HH: Thanks for your comments. These don't have the recesses that the hog ring pliers I've seen have had. With the return spring and the hand-forged flare on the front of the front handle to be easy on the fingers, this is made for some highly repetitive task. The people I talked to concluded it was a sprue cutter, but that could certainly be wrong. There was also half of an ancient buckshot mold in the bucket, but that doesn't prove anything. Again, thanks for your comments.
