Well, I can't give up a Hawken and hunting. I tried but i suck at giving up on anything.

I just ordered the new Lyman GPR made by Pedersoli in .54. I found one at a good price. I'll hunt black bear and muley and if I can talk my Lakota friend into an elk hunt i'll do that too.

It may take a few weeks to get the gun. The place I bought it from is way behind on shipping.

That's it for now. Good to be back. I was bored to death not thinking about hunting.

Pete, I think it's great you still want to hunt with a nice plains rifle. Toughing it out is the only way to go. It's better to wear out than to rust out. Good luck.

Let us know how the Pedersoli is.

If I buy one I think I’ll strip it and finish with a nice dark nut brown and give it a shiny oil finish. I’ve read many originals were finished quite dark in this manner. The orangish reddish finish Pedersoli is using looks like it could use a bit of a spruce.

I was planning the same thing. I like it with a darker stain. I wish it was browned instead of blued but from what I read the Hawken was mostly blued. So i'm ok with blued.

I hope you like the nut brown stain. I used it on my Turkey rifle and didn't care for the results. A little too red to suit me and it muddied up the curl. But that could have been my fault. I used it full strength and I think it might have been better cut in half. The next time I want a brown stain I'll look at a walnut stain.

From one old coot to another hang in there and enjoy all of life you can. That Lyman GPR by Pedersoli should be a good one. I had one of the older Lyman GPR still have a tattoo from that little but plate, little slow learning my lesson.

I had to take a break and cool off. I had a problem with a member. I'll just ignore him now.

I did make a change with the Pedersoli. I'm just going to hunt for deer, so I went with a .50 instead of the .54.
