Trade gun......
« on: March 05, 2021, 09:11:36 AM »
I’m a longtime lurker. Have never built a BP firearm before. I’ve always wanted a trade gun. Who makes a correct kit? I see 30”-44” barrels.... pro’s and cons? I appreciate the information and help. Craig

Be sure to not use maple if you’re interested in correct. Smart Dog can direct you to posts where he covers how to make black walnut look more like English walnut.

"Trade"- guns were traded in America for hundreds of years and under went many changes. I am assuming you are referring to the common Northwest pattern that appeared in the late 18th century?  If you want "correct" it would be best to do a lot of research on the particular style and time period you wish to portray,,,Ed

There were many types of trade guns, the north west type and many French types also. More info might be needed to get you were you want to. Go.

Have a look at the one for sale on RE Davis web site....I like that one.  I do not like Centre Mark's Tulle design...it's a cheek buster.

That’s a wide range, style wise. Most trade guns were quite light weight, so getting a barrel that tapers nicely to the muzzle is important regardless of what you end up choosing.

For a so called Carolina gun or type G, I hear Clay Smith offers kits.  Many of these were stocked in beech, which is hard to find. Some are inked, some are painted.

From what I know, kits by Track of the Wolf are going to weigh more than originals because of the barrels they use.

I have seen good reports and satisfied customers who chose Danny Caywood kits.

For the hard core, buying parts individually and maybe having the barrel inletted into a stock blank with the ramrod drilled is a good way to go.

Does this apply to something like a Leman?

The original post was about trade guns of the 1700s, almost all imported. Leman trade guns were post 1820 at least. In For Trade and Treaty book an 1840s Leman trade gun pages 181 and following was stocked in walnut. Tryon 1841 trade gun pages 175 and following stocked in walnut. Tryon chiefs grade, walnut.  I am not talking about rifles but rather smoothbore trade guns.

Hey all, I'd like to comment that several people are missing the point. Both Hooch and Lilysdad are pretty new judging by their # of posts. It seems to me that Rich and a few others are the main members trying to guide and explain.

The problem with new participants in this hobby is that there are so many "incorrect" reproduction firearms out there that they soon become viewed as "correct"!!! It is best to pick out a time frame or particular style that you wish to portray and then do diligent research.  There are many good books on the subject and many knowledgeable makers.

I went back and reread the OP a couple of times and there is no mention of a date.

If you call Pecotonica river they can supply you with a proper stock French or English in walnut inlet for barrel and ramrod lock of your choice and have all the parts you need. I picked up a stock from them N W trade gun with the barrel and ramrod done I used the chambers colonial virginia lock, nice wood, you can get drawings from TOTW . I don't think Davis kits are available he sold out to Log Cabin you can check with them. Lorne

Discussions go like this. It’s perfectly normal and fine. Each person - original poster, contributors, and readers - sift it for their own purposes. Hopefully you gained some information.

For those who say “wait for the Kibler kit”: has a date of launch been shared? If before 2022 that would be good to know. If not, waiting may not work for everyone.
