For you all that have his sheet metal rear peep or made one of your own , is there any problems with the sight wanting to twist (windage) if bumped since there's only one screw holding it in place ? Not talking about dropping the gun or anything severe but things do get bumped around in normal use .

Nope took it elk hunting in below zero weather and all over the state shot it everywhere under every conceivable condition. Rock solid.

A simply little peg, soldered onto the sight's base, to stick into a corresponding hole will stop anything but a direct heavy blow from moving it.
Pretty simple fix. Air rifle scope bases have just such a peg to fit into corresponding holes in the tops of the receivers to stop rearward movement
due to the double recoil(both ways) experienced with springers. The same scenario would stop lateral movement in your peep sight.

Thanks, good idea I may take it a step further and dimple the tang and install a small 6-32 screw in the sight and use that for elevation adjustment . Maybe not HC but not planning on even putting a barrel mounted rear sight on this rifle as their useless to my eyes anymore

Now that's an idea, Tim, however the brass might not be very springy - or if suspended above the tang, will be more susceptible to damage/bending up.
The tang "dimple" would certainly help with preventing side to side movement, although less secure than a hole. Lots to think about.

I've had the same experience as MuskratMike. Been one on my 54 cal for 2 years, rock solid without any dimples or set screws. A piece of 2 sided tape could also be used under the sight if desired.

That little peg Daryl talked about is what I was thinking for a heavy recoil gun when I want to work up loads to find the most accurate combo. That longer sight radius should help but when I find the best load I would take it off and use the mid barrel sight to sight the gun in with that best load.

OK, I'm confused. If I'm only using a peep to find the best load why would I worry about it being bumped or twisted during field use?

If you just use it to work up loads you would take it off when you found the best load and sight the gun in with the regular mid barrel sight. When your working up the best loads you don't want the sight to shift in the middle of a shot string which would give you a false outcome for that load. Hope that clarified things.

Ok I have lowells and have made my own I set them up as a co witness looking through the midlle sight It mkes me cheek the rifle the same every time . as far as movement I add some duct tape on the under side of the sight it protects the wood/rifle and makes movement less (you can also have a witness mark on sight(line) and tang (dot) if it moves you'll see it and can return to "zero"

Thanks for those picture Recurve . I plan on making the sight out of a piece of .060 sawzall blade so it will have some spring to it and am going to arch the base that goes on the tang so hopefully that added pressure will help . If I find later that movement is and issue I'll dimple and pin. Thanks all for the assistance

I put a much smaller hole in my peep than the Lowell sight, if it isn't perfectly aligned the front blade doesn't center in the rear sight when I shoulder the gun. If it were to get misaligned a simple tap to line the front and rear sight up perfectly is easy to do. I knocked it askew a few times to see how hard it would be to get back into alignment, it only took a couple of seconds. Tightened down with tang screw it is pretty solid, I would have to drop the rifle on something to get it to move. (top picture)

I made another sight out of 1/16" metal with an 1/8" hole like Lowell's peep, the hole exposed the entire rear sight and part of the barrel when I put it on a TC. I need to make another with a smaller aperture.(bottom picture)

Just remember Lowell's is a GHOST ring / large hole for hunting or cowitnessing other sights not a peep sight >>>-->peep are rear sights insted of a fixed barrel rear sight>>>--> both force you to mount the rifle the same everytime = better down range resolts and for us older guys seems to sharpen up the sight/target picture

Try a small hole then try to see it in hunting light >>>--> you can always make a bigger hole w a drill but trying to get smaller is harder

I need to figure out how to make a 2 hole /changeable without going to a screw in like williams peep sights

Thanks for a nice selection of pics on the sights, gives me some ideas. It would be some work but if you dovetailed the rear of that sight so you could slide a blank across the hole, the blank having two different sized holes. I hope that makes sense. I have one some what like that and if I can find it will post a pic.

Metal work is not in my tool kit but I want to make one. Help from you all is greatly appreciated. What tools do you need and what metal is easy to use for a novice. Will I have to heat the metal? The pictures show me the shape. Thank you Percy for this post. Thank you jeff weger

So far I have not heated the metal , a grinder, files, dremal/drill , large plyers ,hammer ,and something to act as an anvil (I sink my maul into a stump/log and use the flat hammer side) work slowly make to fit DO NOT HAMMER/ADJUST Sight when on rifle. a large flat screw driver is used to open the fold/bend if I go to far . scrape metal / brass try to a line the hole with your sights(you should be able to see the front in the notch of your back/rear sight) on the gun small hole first you can always make it bigger (making it smaller is alot harder

That Lowell Haarer style sight is just so easy to make and is so effective I hesitate to post this pic of a sight that I have showing how you could make and adjustable sight out of one of the Lowell style sights. It would somewhat defeat one of the good pouints of the Haarer sight in that it would take more work to make but I will throw it out there in case anyone cares to look it over. Not real sharp pics but the dovetail blank slides back and forth and is locked in place by a small set screw.

The dovetailed blank would go toward your eye. Make hole in blank any size you want, even for a screw in eye cup.

Smylee, interesting sight. How would you mount that particular sight ? I see where their may be some elevation adjustment ?

I posted a pic of that sight just to show how and where the dovetailed blank is with the idea that you could do that to one of the Lowell Haarer sights , to make it windage adjustable or if you had two blanks, with different sized holes for use on targets and large hole for hunting. The sight in the pic would be drilled and taped into the tang but that sight has a rather course thread making adjustments course also.
