These are pictures of a newly completed compostie New England Fowler. The archecturture is based on an early example by Thomas Earl. Intersting lines with it's straight comb and curved butt underside. In keeping with a lot of these early Fowlers is has a 46" .62 caliber barrel that has a octagon section transition into the round with no wedding band. This piece is iron mounting using a variety of hardware such as the hand swaged buttplate, recycled French cloud sideplate and a blacksmith made reconvertedd gate latch for the trigger guard. A very early doglock was used as well.

Really like the look, very interesting lock design. What kind of trigger pull do you get with that type of lock? Overall, very nice work.

Percy this is a very old lock design and has whats called a lateral sear. The sear is activated by pushing it straight back to the tail of the lock. The tumbler looks more like a curved ramp than a conventional tumbler. The trigger is not much more than a bar that is pinned height above the sear. It acts as a simple lever to pull against the sear bar. Having said all of that the placement of the trigger doesn't work out much different than a standard setup. The trigger pull on this Fowler is setup at 13 1/4. I'll see if I have some pictures of the internals to post.

This troubles me. First off, I'm no gun builder and this is not about your quality of work. The stock work is first class. What bothers me is the lock. My first impression is the lock is a modern art interpretation of a lock. The shape of the cock is discordant in relation to the rest of the gun. Maybe it is my limited knowledge of flintlock design.

Please explain to me what I'm missing here. I seriously am not trying to be an AH. This is just what I see after looking at a big number of rifles and guns. There is consistency and a flow that is missing in this one.

Such locks date to the late 1600s. In Grinslade’s Flintlock Fowlers book, New England Fowler 1 has such a lock. Maybe identical. It is unusual to see such an early lock. Not surprising it looks strange to you.

The lock used here was made from a set of castings from the Rifle Shoppe which were created by wax molds from an original lock as an exact copy - John Burgers fowler
