Simple container

I have to thank the famous John Proud for this idea, and pushing me to think outside of the box when it comes to horn work. This is a little container made of all horn. The top and bottom is chimed in with a horn top. It could be used for snuff percussion caps or whatever you want to fit in it. The diameter is 2” and the height in just a hair over 1”. Wi be doing some engraving on it I think.

Very nice!   I would sure like to learn to do chimed bottoms and tops.   Does anybody know of a tutorial?

I had one on here years ago when I first learned how to do it.  I have been thinking of making a video on it if there is enough interest in something like that

Ed, great job and will be a perfect container for percussion caps. especially with the rotating top to close.

Ed,

My idea was to make it our of horn-which you "knocked out of the park"! I believe I saw photos of one made out of wood on this site. Later dimensions were posted. Great site for seeing work and getting ideas for future projects.

Chimed in simple terms a groove cut into the horn and the you make a piece to fit into the base and the grooves you made it makes air tight without the need for glue.

I did not know what chimed was either. Does the horn stretch a bit and the turned part snap into place?

I'm of the same opinion as Flatsguide. How about a brief tutorial? I'm not sure if pics are necessary, but I'd sure like to know more.

Yes and no I heat the horn up in this case the outside or the body of the container. Then I pop in the bottom piece then cool it rapidly. If all goes well the piece will fit in nice and tight and be water tight. If I get some time I will write up a tutorial on the process.
