Traditional Skills Weekend - 5 classes - new photos added

Just a quick announcement - New educational event coming to Canter's Cave in Jackson Ohio on the weekend of May 21-23. We are calling it the "Traditional Skills Weekend". As of now we have five classes scheduled exploring Flintknapping, Bowmaking, Prehistoric Pottery, Leather Hunting Pouches and Belt Axe / Tomahawk Forging. Of these five classes I can really only discuss these two here on ALR -

The Pouch Making Workshop is a 2 day class with leatherworker Maryellen Pratt. Participants will learn how to hand stitch and finish a traditionally styled leather hunting bag . The Belt Axe / Tomahawk Workshop will be taught by ABS journeyman smith Rich McDonald - participants will learn how to forge, heat treat and haft a belt axe and /or hammer poll or spike tomahawk.

Going to be a great way to get out and shake off this year long spell of cabin fever we've all suffered from, plus learn a thing or two and probably have fun in the process! Those would have been forged by instructor Rich McDonald. The next photo shows one of his students at the anvil during the class, and the photo at the bottom shows another one of his students looking at one of the pieces he made in class. Students often get a pair of heads forged and at least one handle fitted up.

I should have mentioned that all of these classes are open to beginners. Tools are provided for most of them (with the exception of the Tomahawk Workshop, but even that one has a relatively short tool list) making for light travel to class and less expense. As with all the S.O.A.W. Workshops, your meals and lodging are included in the class prices.

A quick update -  the bowmaking class is almost full (one spot open as of now) but the belt axe / tomahawk, hunting pouch, flintknapping and pottery classes still have availability.

Additionally, we are giving away a pair of $225 scholarships to young adults  -  "Young adults between the ages of 18 and 26 and interested in attending one of the Traditional Skills Weekend classes -  You now have an incentive to join in ! We are giving away a pair of $225 scholarships and it's easy to apply  - To enter you must be between 18 and 26 years old. Go to the Southern Ohio Artisan Workshops website , and under "request information"  check off "Traditional Skills Scholarship". In the question/ comment box, type in your first and second choice of classes, tell us a little bit about yourself including your age and any interests / hobbies that may relate to the type of classes we're having,  and list any prior experience you may have in traditional skills - don't worry if you're a beginner, it won't count against you . The whole thing really only needs to be a few sentences long. 

We will be drawing the two winners on April 5th. Entrants must provide their own transportation to the event and will need to pay the balance of the class fee and any materials fees. One class (tomahawk) requires you to bring tools but the others do not. "
