« on: March 14, 2021, 01:38:31 AM »
Hey gang I have two projects going. One a Soddy an the other is an SMR rifle Barrels are inserted in both. Now I've did a few guns with sort tangs with barrel attached to breech plug.
But never one with these long tands. So what's the best approach. TIA

Ken thanks for your input.  Very much appreciated. My first thought was that with the barrel inletted. It might be better to remove the breech plug inlet the tang then put it back in the barrel. Then again  don't have your experience. Thanks again

I've never tried inletting one without it being attached to the barrel.  I'm not saying it wouldn't work but I think it would be hard to keep it oriented with the barrel bore.  When removing the barrel you will need to be careful and learn to bump it out from the butt first.  Pulling the barrel out from the muzzle with a long tang will continuously bend the tang.

Keep us posted with the progress.

Just did a lollipop style but with a diamond on the end instead of a circle . It was a chore as it was my first one . Cut well inside of your tracing lines ! Cut a little and try the fit , over and over and over again . Mines not perfect but no too bad for my rookie skills

Here's a few pictures of my first attempt at making one of these tangs and inletting it. The biggest challenge on this one was trying  to line the hole for the lollypop to come out in the predrilled and tapped hole on Jim Kiblers triggers. God willing they'll be finished today!

Ken taking your advice an the advice of everyone else. Thought I would take the Soddy tang first. Because it's mostly a straight long tang. Then I will do the other. Thanks everyone !

Thanks Bob, I don't know if its period correct or not, but I'm stocking this poor boy in cherry and I don't think that is correct anyway.

Looks really good. I’ve got to do one of those one of these years. I imagine that getting the profile right is a big part of it.

Not to change the subject, but I was looking at Kibler's SMR trigger yesterday and it's quite nice.  The question that I had was whether he'd sell them without the holes already drilled for tang bolt(s) and I would presume he would.

My advice is to pay special attention to the diagram in Ken’s link, showing the extra draft, especially on the upper side of the screw boss.  That’s very important to avoid a gap in the wood at that spot.
That and start the inlet at the top and work your way down, rather than trying to inlet the entire length at once.

Good luck,
Jeff

No, Kibler will not sell the triggers sans screw holes. I asked him that very same question. He will sell the triggers separately from kits but they come with the holes.
