Since the last one was restricted by YouTube, we have shortened and re-released the video of the assembly of a Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle Kit at the Shawshank Woodshop Museum.  I know many of you have already watched the first one, but we think this one is better.  Thanks for your support!

Katherine

According to my mother's sister , I was a morally
abandoned man because I have a license to carry a gun in 40
states.I asked her about a neighbor on the adjoining property
that filled the area with all levels of law enforcement she said
"We do NOT ever mention him".His name was John Wayne Gacey.
Yes,I am a very evil gun advocate.

Just happened to drive by that place last Wednesday  Only about 24 miles from here.  Nice work on the rifle, always have enjoyed your work and your dialogue.

Well maybe I missed it but how long did it take to assemble that rifle to the " it could be shot " condition?

Hi,
Since Jim's new video is also on You Tube, the "restriction" was probably due to length not content.  Very nice, Jim, and your SMR has the best architecture of any I've ever seen.

So, we got sort of the run around with Youtube.  They sent us a message a while ago saying the original video was age-restricted.  We weren't sure why, so we contacted them.  They responded that they don't show it as being age-restricted.  Go figure.  In any case the original video doesn't always show up depending on whether you are signed in or not etc.  It also isn't being promoted at all.  Views dropped off dramatically.  So we decided to upload a new one.  We wanted to create a shorter verision anyways.  Hopefully, it will get some good traction, doesn't get flagged for some unknown reason.

Thanks,
Jim

I worked on the rifle for two days.  So it was completely finished in this time.  I do have a fair amount of experience, though. ;)

No good reason not to seal the barrrel channel and other inlets. I was probably just a little lazy or eager to get the rifle done ;)  I would suggest sealing the inlets, though.  Interestingly enough I don't think this was ever done on original work.  At least there's no evidence I've ever seen.

All the best,
Jim

Jim,

I think you are correct in not seeing sealed barrel channels or inlets on original rifles.  In 1984 I built my .45 caliber schimmel.  Chuck Dixon showed me a bunch of originals in his big collection.  None showed any signs of having been sealed in those areas.  But then at that time we had a stock stain on the market that was made with hydrochloric acid "with iron for color. That form of iron would have been ferric chloride.  But all of my experiments showed that ferric chloride actually contained little iron.  You applied the stain to the stock and used a lot of heat on it.  So what you had was the acid charring the wood surface.  A lot of residual acid remaining in the wood.  That gave a lot of rusting inside the locks and a lot of brass corrosion where the brass contracted the wood.  You would see brass parts with a green stain around the edges of the brass.  So to slow or stop that one had to put a lot of sealer in the barrel channel and under the inletted brass parts.  So this sealing of barrel channels and brass inletted parts is something fairly recent.  I built several schimmel rifles with nitrate of iron stain I made from nitric acid and none showed any trend towards after rusting of the gun parts.

Guess all depends on how well you take care of your firearms.
Thanks for the reply Jim.  Much appreciated.  Oldtravler
