Flint size for a Late Ketland
« on: March 21, 2021, 07:04:49 PM »
Just a little confusion goin on here and want to make sure I don't buy the wrong thing . I'm new to flintlock rifle's and i'm down to the end of my wait for my first rifle and want to have flints ready and on hand .  The rifle has a Chambers Late Ketland lock on it and the Chamber's site recommends 3/4 x 5/8 . My confusion is where ever I've looked all I find are 3/4 x 7/8 . Not having a clue about any of this will the lock perform ok without a 3/4 x 5/5 flint . Sure would appreciate any help or advice on this topic .

                                    Thanks
                                        Dan

When I got my first rifle with a Chambers Late Ketland lock I was also confused by that. I called Jim and the 5/8 x 3/4 is what he recommends. I have had 4 others made since that time all with the Late Ketland lock and have fired over 1000 rounds using that flint. Some liked bevel up one likes bevel down.

So I'm getting the feeling that the more important dimension is the width , so you don't hit the side barrel ,correct ? But different lengths will work , some better than others I suppose . What about bevel up or down ?  I'm guessing bevel up would be better for a longer flint . Thanks for the help so far guy's , I just never had to deal with these kind of circumstances when choosing what primer to use in a load , or what cap on my percussion gun's . LOL .

If its a tad too wide mount its extra on the off side and not on the barrel side.  ;)

You're overthinking this a wee bit. Chambers calls the flint 3/4 x 5/8 everyone else calls the same flint 5/8 x 3/4. The flint you want to use is 5/8 - inch wide by 3/4 - inch long. Hope this makes it clear as mud.

Thanks Mike thats exactly what I needed to know . Makes more sense now why no one had a 3/4 x 5/8 . I will order some 5/8 x 3/4 . Thanks for the help , and yep it is clear as mud now .
