Morphys April 27 auction
« on: March 26, 2021, 06:42:38 PM »
There are some interesting long rifles shown in the April 27 auction.  I don't know how valid their pricing is and the 20% buyers premium scares me. It doesn't cost anything to look though.  Any pieces you especially like?

I like the look of Lot 3019 Hudson Valley Fowler with the wrist repair. However, the estimate looks very low for one of these, which is a glaring red flag for me.

Don, I like the J&S Hawken marked big percussion fullstock rifle that appears like the lock was originally flint. Heck of a big strong gun suitable for going west.

One thing with the lock that stands out is that the border engraved line is set back very far from the edge of the lockplate. Possibly a low quality Liege lock.

Rich--They would probably supply more photos to an interested party. I've gotten them for other Lots from time to time. Just call customer service.

From the description, it sounds like the only thing Sheets is the name on the barrel....

Judging from the early bids, I am not the only one that liked the swivel breech

This gun was nicely discussed on ALR in 2016 and caught my eye. We drove down from New Hampshire to Morphy's to inspect the gun on Friday and then I did on-line bidding. Somebody must have left a BIG " pre-bid maximum", as each of my bids was immediately over-bid. The auction starts shortly, so I went in to re- bid enough to get this beauty (my wife's urging). I just got this notice .... Bill Paton will need to figure out who withdrew this gun, so he can study it further for his seminal work on flintlock swivel breech guns

Don, if you check WESTbury''s link, you'll see that you had actually participated in this discussion. Indeed on May 04 , 2016 you apparently wrote that "It is not for sale ..., " and then you give the 60 year providence of this Daniels'  # 7 swivel breech gun. I'm away from home and my access to details is limited, but
I hope WESTbury guides you back to this chain
