volume shot measures

I've been playing with the shotguns a bit lately and was shooting trap with my Pedersoli double. 1 1/4 oz shot and 85 gr 1.5f O.E. Recoil was a lot more than I expected. Dropped to an ounce of shot and 75 gr 1.5f. Recoil was still pretty stiff. When I got home I checked the weight of shot my Irish shot measure was throwing. Funny thing, an ounce of #9 takes up a lot less space than #6 shot set for an ounce it was throwing 1 1/4 and 1 1/4 was almost 1 5/8 oz.   A little much for an afternoon of trap shooting. I cut some cork gasket material and pressed it into cup of the charger and now it throws an ounce of #9. Will have to check/adjust if I use bigger shot.

Not surprised it kicked a bit.
That 1 5/8oz of shot weighs 711gr.  That is a little heavier than a .775"(10 gauge) pure lead ball.
1 ounce is 437.5gr. = 1/16th pound which is 7,000gr.

I almost always have to "re-calibrate" measures.  They are never marked corectly.

I agree with Prairie Dog,  You have to calibrate for the grain size of the powder and the size of lead shot that you are shooting.  I use an electronic scale  to weigh it out.  Every measure that I had didn't throw what I thought it did.  James Levy

Final weighing of shot, and sometimes powder, gives me the information I need to keep from going wild in the loading.  An ounce of shot is a pretty good load in a 20 ga.
