After a night of thunderstorms in Friendship, Indiana, students arrived ready to learn at the second Kibler Kit assembly class with Mike Brooks and Wayne Estes. Workstations are spread apart in the NMLRA Education Center, giving students enough room to spread out their tools through the week. Many of the 7 students have come with their rifles still in the box, but a couple have already assembled their kits, looking to focus on learning to carve traditional motifs into their longrifle stocks.

The Southern Mountain Rifle was a favorite during last year's class, but the Kibler Colonial makes up the majority of this week痴 class at 5.
With a coffee pot going, students begin inletting and fitting the parts of their Kibler Kits. Barrels and buttplates go on first, providing some stability and protection to the stocks.

Mike and Wayne have brought a few pieces from their personal collections for students to take inspiration from. There is no better reference than a fine rifle in person to guide the decisions of these new builders.

By noon on the first day, students have their locks and their trigger assemblies inlet. After a break for lunch students returned to their benches. Both Mike and Wayne have remarked how far ahead this class is over the last one. By the end of today, students will have spent nearly シ of the day on wood and hardware cleanup.

If we are able to keep at this pace, the students will have two days to add carving and other details to their Kibler Kits.

Yep! We won't be duplicating the videos from the last class, but will featuring some of the new things Mike and Wayne will be teaching.

Students arrived early this morning eager to continue work on their Kibler kits. With their hardware fitted to the stock yesterday, students are spending this morning learning about filing, sanding, and polishing techniques for their hardware. The Southern Mountain Rifle kits are finishing their hardware a bit faster than the Colonial Kits. The students with Colonial Kits are wanting to make a longrifle with some more details, including facets on the trigger guard, ramrod pipes, and buttplate.

Mike and Wayne are great teachers for the traditional techniques of filing and sanding, but have brought some modern tools to assist these new builders. Drill powered scotch brite wheels make for quick polishing of the iron or brass hardware.
After noon on Monday, students began diverging from each other. Some continue polishing their metal while others begin learning about decoration through chip carving and moulding lines. By four o clock the class wrapped up, tomorrow students will continue carving or begin the staining process on their stocks.  We're starting to see these muzzle-loaders taking shape as students begin carving and staining their stocks.

It's been fun seeing Wayne introduce students to torch bluing as a finishing technique for their hardware. One SMR Kit student has used it for all of his hardware, making for a great looking rifle when assembled with his curly walnut stock. I like watching these classes because I can see all the options being weighed and implemented.

Like a spring flower blooming after a long winter, student rifles are coming together this afternoon. Those with staining complete will continue to apply oil into tomorrow.

Carving is being finalized before and parts are being reassembled, we can finally see the hard work of these students paying off in the shape of the American Longrifle.

Wayne's countdown clock is ticking down this morning as everyone works towards completing their Kibler Kits.

6/7 will have a completed kit from this week. 1 student, who took last year's class, took his time in class to study carving, inletting and some engraving and will be completing his kit at home.

With some light snow outside, our "Spring" Kibler Kit Class with Mike Brooks wrapped up today! Students applied their last coats of oil and assembled their parts before loading up their tools and heading home after a wonderful week.

I've really enjoyed this and thanks for posting it.

In the picture of the 3 stocks leaning against the building, the 2 outside ones have a nice dark finish. How was that dark color achieved?

A base coat of Trans Tint Honey Amber mixed 1 part to 3 parts water, Kibler Iron Nitrate applied allowing to dry then blushed, 1 coat of LMF Lancaster Maple applied then wiped off!
 That痴 it.

Hey folks, I've got several of the videos edited from this class and they are going live weekly on the NMLRA Youtube Channel. The Hair and Makeup team worked overtime on this round!

More of these videos from this and the last class are available in this playlist

I hope you enjoy them as much as I did filming Mike and Wayne. Thank you both for the opportunity!

I really like the fire blued finish as well. I have used a  propane torch on on screws and a few small parts but never on large parts like lock plates, trigger guards, and butt plates. I think I might try this technique on a rifle I am working on right now. Thanks for sharing the information.
