Considering getting a .54, barrel with gain twist for my next rifle. Was told gain twist handles patched ball very well. Any opinions/experiences out there?

I should add- The gain is gradual enough to avoid patch stripping.

There has been a lot of discussion here concerning gain twist barrels. I had Bobby Hoyt bore and rifle an original Ohio rifle to .40 with 1/60 to 1/40 twist. It shot very well, heavy charges, light charges, I could shoot em all. Probably the most accurate  rifle I have ever owned. Lots of squirrels and lots of X's!!! That was 35 years ago when I could shoot and when I could see! If you believe a gain twist will shoot better then it probably will shoot better, Your confidence in the barrel will make it shoot better!!!! (IMHO)....LK

I've had a .45 percussion for about 55 years with a gain twist barrel.  I don't know how they actually stack up against uniform rifled barrels, but the accuracy is definitely beyond reproach.  It starts out a very slow twist and speeds up toward the muzzle quite a bit.  I wouldn't necessarily pay extra for such a barrel but would also never turn one down if I could easily afford it.

I know Bill's barrels were choked, but did not know he rifled any with a gain twist.

and my son's reborded gpr from .50 to .54 gain twist quick sight in

Colerain. I was not seeking a gain twist but it was the only one they had in stock in the profile I wanted. They were very helpful and prompt.

My 58 has a 36 inch gain twist barrel.  It shoots a wide range of charges using round ball very accurately.  Have also experimented with a heavy skirted mini and got OK results.  Still working on lube and load combinations on the bullet.

DPhar's 18 pound flintlock plank rifle has a Jim McLemore gain twist barrel, of 5140 barrel steel.

A couple of my friends have barrel that were re rifled to larger calibers by Hoyt with gain twist.  They shoot very well but can't tell u if they are any better than standard rifling.  Bobby is making me a .60 in gain twist that I hope to pick up in a couple of weeks.  I've seen what he can do with his own .60 in gain and it's pretty impressive!

I have a 36 and 40 in gain twist from Bobby.  Both are pretty new.  Im still working on loads and sighting in.
