Well, this isn't exactly an accompaniment for a longrifle, but it is contemporary. Thought you might like to see it.

This is a knife I made for my son for Christmas. I will be giving it to him tomorrow, as work and covid have kept us apart for some time, longer than we like.

The grip is apple wood, the scabbard is beech. High carbon blade, silver band. Steel fittings on the scabbard.

Then some 'how to' photos.

This was the original knife, a victorian era butterknife, wicked good steel, best quality, wot?




Then the inspiration, a Viking ship figurehead.




The scabbard was made in halves, then fitted together and glued. Titebond II




A view inside the scabbard, and the glue joint.




A view of the steel tip, formed in halves, then brazed together. This is black stovepipe, a most ductile steel, FYI.

Wow.  There is a lot of skill, talent and persistence shown there.  The finishes are lovely and the dragon/raptor head pommel is an unexpected surprise (in a great way).  He'll treasure that one forever.  Well done sir, well done indeed.   God Bless,   Marc

Very nice photography. That’s a good looking knife and scabbard. Photo 1 & 2 evoke a feeling of a very ancient knife. What a great gift.

I like that entire rig.  Nice pommel and sheath.  I can not see a glue joint.

Heinz, the joint is hard to see because the pieces were cut from the same block, only a bandsaw kerf and some hand planing is taken from the blank.
The grain matches up better than I'd hoped.

A LOT of work went into making that knife & sheath for sure. I like the handle it is surely very different a true one of a kind gift :) 8) ;).

Tom, I'm glad that you said "Viking figurehead".  I was going to congratulate you on a toucan sitting on top of a pine cone!

Really does look nice.  I've been working on a wooden sheath using a Celtic knot pattern, it is NOT coming out as lovely as yours.
