What's "quilted"?

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Hi Mike,

Here’s a technical definition I found online:
“Quilted maple is so named for its resemblance to patchwork patterns seen on fabric quilts. Much like birdseye maple, the figure on quilted maple becomes most pronounced when the board has been flatsawn”

The stock blank I am working off of is probably more partially quilted. The inletter and the source I purchased from described butt stock as “quilted” and the rest of the stock has awesome curl! Each have told me independently that it stands out from across the shop.

Here’s a picture

Beautiful wood, curious about how hard and dense it is? Looks great!

I have never understood the term quilted. It's striped or curled.

Hard to make out the direction of those stripes, Taylor!   ;D

Very sharp tools needed, I’m guessing.

There is no direction to the figure but rather splotches of end grain from the figure rising to the surface and shaved off by the planer exposing the curl.  Yes sharp tools are essential and much care in finishing to avoid the fuzzing from the exceptionally irregular grain.  What this figure reminds me of is a pot of boiling water, frozen, and then shaved off flat to expose the mountains, valleys and side hills of the bubbles.  The mountains and valleys remain light in colour and the side hills soak up stain and oxidation.  The grain is quite open in this wood, but is more or less parallel over the length of the board.  I think it'll make into a spectacular stock.

I have sen modern rifles made of quilted maple and they did not do the wood justice, due to no staining, just from the oil.
This wood will appear very "BUSY".
Ats5331 - your blank appears to be tiger stripe with some flame. Very nice.  :)

The patterns vary, and sometimes include birdseyes. Have to be careful with drawknife or scrapers to not pop out certain areas. Reminds me of chocolate swirl ice cream! This piece into a Leman rifle many years ago. Nitric acid would be good, or any stain you like, then whisker or rub back, stain again and rub back, repeat until you get the contrast you like. Thank you Taylor, we enjoy all the beautiful stocks from your bench. Those sticks you have are amazing, and will hide a nice rifle! Might be better in furniture where the wood carries the day. This piece on the Leman came from Bill with Wahkon Bay many years back. Bob

I still don't understand the term quilted. I have yet to see wood that looked quilted. Striped, curled, marbled, birds eyed and even spotted I get, but nothing that looks like any quilt I've ever seen. Taylor's description of boiling water I can see.

Having grown up in Michigan, the phrase was commonly used. Plenty of maples trees there, and maple boards for cabinets had that referral also.

What's "quilted"?
Mike, It has been rumored that the native American's wood of choice for canoe guns was quilted maple.  It is said that you could also split off the quilts and lace them together to make a blanket.  Thus the origin of the word "quilt".

After exhausting research and histerical conformation I must concur with Mr Rase’s explanation and in particular the correct reference to the ever popular Canoe Gun.

Quilted Maple is drop-dead gorgeous. (I have used it on Mountain Dulcimers). Your stock should be a real dandy!

The meandering grain lines in the photos posted by Taylor and Bob do bear a striking similarity to the meandering style of quilting.  This form of quilting is more freeform and not a defined, repeated pattern.

Why, yes my wife is a quilter.

I think/believe it's the rounded grain structure & "patch" appearance that give the description "quilted".

The one gun I built with it. I
called the stock from h@ll. But it sure was pretty when done.  Well the wood part anyway..

I think both of these would qualify as quilted.  It's a beautiful wood when finished but a bugger to work because of the grain.

Bob's dulcimer and Taylor's first picture are classic representations of quilted maple. It's used often in custom guitars as well.
