If I understand you correctly, this fixes your problem.

Then the gun needs professional help.
If the lock will not function properly without setting the trigger its not safe.

I agree with Dan.  If your lock fires just trying to cock it, it is not safe.  If you have to get the triggers out of the way just to cock it, it is not safe.  At some point, you will get the order of operation out of order, and have an accident.  It can be made right...make it so.

This thread is somewhat confusing to me.  I have two antique guns and one custom gun that require the set trigger to be set in order to cock the gun.  I believe these are single phase double set triggers.  Am I wrong, and are these guns in need of some repair?

I don't know that they need "repair", but it is definitely not the best setup.

I imagine it was sometimes done historically so that you could use a set trigger with a lock that had no fly.

I agree, it is not the setup I would prefer, but as you mentioned, all of the locks do not have flys. I have learned to adjust to these triggers, but i can see where someone not familiar with them would have concerns.

The ones I have fixed has the triggers too high.  OR, the single set mechanism did not have a stop on the rear trigger spring, So I added one.

Never dealt with a fly less lock.  IF I had one I would install a non set trigger or a fly.  Having to set the trigger first to cock the rifle is unsafe. AD's will get you kicked out of a club real fast.

I don't care what the old timers did.  They had many firearms accidents too.  A great-great  uncle died from such an accident.  They did not seem to care about safety as we do today.

On a modern made gun with a modern commercially made lock with a fly, there is NO reason to have a gun set up this way.  You can work on the tops of the triggers, or work on the "backlash" where the spring bears on the rear trigger, but it should be no real problem to make it function without having to set the trigger first.
