Favorite 32 cal loads
« on: April 07, 2021, 05:47:03 PM »
I’ve got the initial sight in done with my 32. Now to tweak the load for tightest groups. Its a Rice barrel, A weight swamped, 38” long. What are y’all’s favorite 32cal loads. I’m presently shooting 30grs 3f and .315 rb with .015 patch.

I like to find the tightest shooting group and then sight in. A 15/1000 patch sounds a little too thin so I would try some 18/1000 or even thicker for a tighter group. A nice smooth crown to help load those thicker patched RB would help loading and accuracy I think. Looks like a nice rifle>  ;) :)

My Rice 42" barrel with 1:48" twist likes a .319 ball with a .015 mink oil lubed patch, and 22 grains of 3f. I sight in at 25 yards and get 3/4" groups off the bench.  I use this gun for squirrel hunting where the shooting ranges are from the end of the muzzle to maybe 45 yards in open woods.  Head shot accuracy is what I want at those ranges.

The .32 I had was not a Rice bl. but had a 48" twist. Here's the muzzle which allowed loading a .019" to .023" patch without using a short starter.
No - you couldn't push it in with your thumb, but could, with choking up on the rod and pushing the ball and patch into the bore, then down with
the rifle's 5/16" hickory rod. Combinations used in this bore were .311" balls from a DC Lee mould as well as .320" balls from a Lee DC mould marked
.319". Note the patches used with both balls. Easy loading with water based lube or Track's Mink Oil soaked patches.
5 shots into a .45" hole using 20gr. 3F GOEX at 25 yards. This load shot 2 1/2" at 50 yards, not good enough for hunting squirrels at that range.  35gr. 3F GOEX put
5 into 1" at 50 yards, which is good enough for squirrels.  35gr. 3f also put 5 into a .45" hole at 25 yards, but maintained it's accuracy better at the longer
range.

I found a .310 with a .018 patch and 28 grains FFFg Goex to be most accurate in my rifle. Plenty of power for hunting too.  This rifle seems to prefer a smaller ball and thicker patch to the reverse.

This is a target of 5 shots with a .311" ball and 30 grains of 3F - can't recall the patch but the lube was Hoppes #9 BP Lube.  This load killed quite a few squirrels from my Crockett.  I threw a major flyer which opened a 4-shot 0.4" group to 1-1/16".  My .32 SMR also shines with this load using a .024" canvas patch.  But with the eye problems I still have yet to settle on a specific load.
