A new Powder Horn

I had a raw cow horn that I decided to make into a Powder Horn this weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed making it, a nice change-of-pace project.  I couldn't decide what scrimshaw in the body part, so I just left it blank. This one will wear best on the left, but fits nicely on the right side also. It has a great twist.
I kind-of like making these, but the smell of filed horn is rather unpleasant (wear a mask!).

Thanks- Yeah the horn dust gets everywhere! I was glad to be able to do a lot of the work outside. Next one I will actually create a design rather that just working away and seeing how it takes form. I may do a generic map or something on it, maybe a PA Dutch motif or something like that... I am glad y'all like this one!

NICE horn, don't sweat the horn smell, I use horn scrapings/ pieces and horse hoof pairings to make charcoal. The smell packs a punch, but it grows on you.

ey Cades Cove Fiddler- yup the country around here is filled with goodness. The landscape is awesome and the folk are kind. And we feel safe and free.
I had read that you cant stain a horn which is true, but I used a dye mix I use on my gun stocks. It penetrates into the horn and I then seal it with very thinly cut blonde shellac. It's really a good, durable finish. Could also past-wax over it now to make it totally waterproof. (I would possibly use Turtle Wax for that).
That stopper kind-of does look like an old dulcimer peg! I just shaped it out of a scrap od Black Walnut. I uess the dulcimer builder in me is influencing more than I am aware !

What do you use for black dye?

If you mean black dye on the spout end, I didn't use any black dye. The horn was that color. I used black ink in the lines I cut, though.
