Thought I’d share this interesting rifle I picked up. Not sure why I did...but it just screamed out to me.
Hope to make this a slow restoration (restock, freshen barrel, replace lock.

1” straight barrel cut, 31 3/8ths inches long
About 40 caliber, shallow flat rifling
No markings on lock
“Elisha Green” on the top flat of the barrel, interesting that the “S” looks stamped in the barrel from a manufacturer.

You might want to reconsider the restoration. Alot of folks love them just the way that is.

I agree with Shreckmeister. Leave it alone. I collect southern rifles and this one is the way that I like to find them, not messed with. It's in the condition that the last owner that use it left it. It's part of the history of the rifle. The stock actually looks to be in pretty good shape. Enjoy it the way that it is. When I get home, I'll check my books to see what I can find out about the maker.

I like that tang. Pretty cool. Is the butt plate copper or brass? Any chance you have a trigger guard picture? Thanks for sharing the pics.

There is an Elisha Green in Whiskers Tennessee book, not much info. Polk County

I tend to believe this gun was built from a collection of accumulated parts, with home made ones filling in the gaps. No doubt by an untrained hand, with only rudimentary skills. I, like several others think the guns magic is its primitive simplicity, and I would not change any part of it.

That’s the first signed Elisha Green rifle I’ve seen. He is buried in Fanin County Georgia. I have one of his unsigned rifles that is a half stock also. I sent you a PM.

If you are going to make a new stock with a new lock, you are two thirds on your way to a new rifle. Get a new barrel too, and leave that old girl alone. You have the perfect opportunity to make a bench copy of the rifle AND you keep the antique.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter. I will fold to with those with more knowledge and experience and keep her as is. Definitely an interesting piece.

Cool rifle! Looks bits and pieces to me, Springfield trigger guard and possibly a reshaped Springfield lock. Lock side of stock looks flat. Very neat, thanks for sharing!

Gun has been repurposed once I'm glad it's not going to happen again. Good decision to leave as is in my opinion
