Best ball size for Colerain 16 ga. Barrel?
« on: April 28, 2021, 03:17:46 AM »
Looking for opinions on what patch and ball combo works best for those that have a 16 ga. Colerain smoothbore.

Thank you all in advance!
Colton

Is it choked?
Usual consensus is approximately .020" to .030" smaller than the actual bore size. If standard choked, then .020" to .030" smaller than the muzzle diameter.
I would use a snug load, to a tight one, thus .015" to .022" patch.

No choke. Standard bore.

my North Star Officers Fusil is .670 bore and I use a .650 ball. 80 gr 2f or 100 gr 1.5f O.E. and .020 ticking with bear grease. 3" at 50yds

Coulda swore I replied to this yesterday, not sure where that went.

I shoot a .648 roundball in my Colerain 16ga smoothbore, with a .010 prelubed cotton patch.  Anything thicker than that is tough enough loading that I'm afraid of bending the steel range rod!  I have a 16ga rifled barrel that I'm working on now and plan on using the same .648 ball, but imagine with the rifling grooves I'll be able to use a thicker pillow ticking for patching.

Either way, 16's throw a hefty chunk of lead!

What kind of rifle are you building with that Rice Early Dutch Lancaster .66.caliber barrel?

An early transitional gun, more freestyle than based on any particular rifle.  Got the barrel inlet, ramrod drilled and profile cut out on the bandsaw so far...

For whatever help it may be....

I have a 16ga with a Getz barrel that has been jug choked.

It shoots a 648 ball and 016 patch with mink oil very well.
