Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Robert/Ian, Sorry for the slow reply. I've been busy working at the local animal shelter bandaging little kitten legs and feet from a devestating fire that destroyed half of our little town. I have the last one (I hope) on my lap right now so I'm typing this one handed. Anyway I'm going to go with an outstanding on this rifle. Certainly something that appeals to me the way you have it finished etc. I think you did a great job with the carving, flows very well and well executed. Brass and wood finish are very well done. The patch box lid brass even matches up to the plate. Hope I get a chance to see and feel this one in person.

While I would personally have a hard time building a new gun to look old, you really nailed this one IMHO. The inevitable little nicks a stock would pick up over the years, the extremely well done metal finishing with a little surface rust in the right places, some buggered screw heads, etc.
I’ve built quite a few Milsurp kits and always tried to match the replacement parts finish to the original parts. It’s not easy to carry out in its entirety and make it convincing, your rifle is an outstanding example.

I very much like the architecture of this rifle, the fit, finish, carving.  Well done.

When I add a butt trap or a patch box, like you, I often find that there is a gap between the brass and the wood inside the cavity.  I usually add a piece of maple there to fill in the gap... Just think it looks a little better finished.

Taylor, good idea on fixing the gap between the box and the brass buttplate. The gap did bother me - looks very untidy.  I think I will go back and fill the gap. Thanks.

Awesome rifle, Rob. The antiquing is interesting! Are you from the Ohio region? What were your thoughts on the classes?

Thanks for sharing

That is what that is. The original says Abrecht on the barrel, but it sure looks like Dickert's early work to me.

Allen, I am in northern Indiana. I think the class is excellent. Recommend it highly. I suspect I'll go back again next year.
