Hello guys! Im starting build a Norwegian naval pistol from scrath, borrowed a nice original from a gun collektor buddy as a model ;)Start with the barrel cal 21 Lødig(16mm) length 262mm smoothbore. The weak point of the pistol is the stock profil!

.63 caliber, interesting indeed. Rifled or smooth, Runar?
I see it has a rear sight at the top of the breech plug.

ScottH, I was just wondering the same thing.

I guess you could fit a chunk of steel to the barrel, then carve away those parts that don't look like they belong. Then drill a hole in chunk, a hole in the barrel, then line them up and weld it on. Then one could drill a hole for the nipple that hits the hole into the barrel, and thread for the nipple. Just tossing out ideas - I've never encountered someone making their own snail.

Seen contemporary percussion muskets made up that had the bolster-snail silver soldered on. You do need tightly fitting mating surfaces .

Sometimes when helping Bill Large I made some for Hawken and they
are not hard to do but will take time.The English types like on an Alex
Henry or similar British gun is less work.That was years ago and now
I have no interest in making any kind.

As said in another reply, just have more metal on the plug than you need and then cut/file the unwanted away to form your snail.

Thank you all! Yes the snail is made from a bit of a thick walled angle iron and silversolder to the breach. Flash hole 2,5mm boring in an angle from the niplehole!Daryl, its smoothbore

Runar you are quite the metal smith. I admire the fact that you are replicating a pistol that by your own admission is not aesthetically pleasing. Also it doesn't look that it would lend itself to pleasant or accurate shooting. So my hat goes off to you , keeping history alive is most important.

I am always fascinated by how you make complicated parts so beautifully by processes that take far more patience than I could ever muster.
