It’s been years since I took a turkey. I took a jake early on with a modern shotgun on a rainy morning, but on 5/21, I was able to do something I’ve wanted to do for a long time... a longbeard with a flintlock.

Thank you!

I’m at least the third owner of that fowler, but it’s gonna live with me a long while.

tddeanglo, Congratulations! No comes the question; grains of powder, shot weight, shot size, what did your shot column look like. Would be very interested to know. Thanks, Jerry

The prior owner of the gun worked up a load using #9 TSS shot, which I have continued to use.

I am aware of the implications of using TSS.

At this point, I shoot only the shots I take on game. The load is established and if I don’t shoot at game I can pull the charge and save the shot.

That said, the load used is 100gr of 2F under 1-5/8oz of #9 TSS. I weigh the shot charge on my metallic reloading scale to the grain. The powder I measure by volume.

I shot a few shots to get acquainted and get a pattern established and it puts well over 200 pellets in a 10” circle at 25 yards, and 165-185 pellets in a 10” circle at 40 yards. Distribution is very even.

With the barrel being jugged, I can still shoot round balls in that same gun, which I do. I took a doe with it this past January, actually.

My round ball load is a 648 ball, 016 patch/mink oil, and 90gr 2F. It shoots under 3” at 50 yards.

Overall, quite pleased with this gun.

16 gauge smoothbores rule!!  Just the optimum combination of power, weight and beauty for turkey and deer.

Beautiful Fowler btw. Great lines.

Any gobbler with a flintlock is a good bird. And you got a real nice one there. The gun's not bad either. Congratulations on a nice bird and beautiful flintlock.

I’ll have to read the rules.

That gun has a rear sight installed on it...which may be a no-go for the match rules.

The match this month is opened up to any smoothbore, even those with sights.
You are good to go.

Congratulations on the fine longbeard. You don't often see tail feathers with barring on them similar to the wing feathers. I've killed only one like that over the years - pretty cool. That TSS shot hits 'em like a hammer!
