I talked with Ian about this. He tried convincing me it opperated via Bluetooth! 😆.  It sure is beautiful!

Hello Bob, just found your post about the patchbox. It's not based on an original but seemed like something that could have been. The inspiration was an original brass tobacco tin who's design I thought would work well for the patchbox design. I used the same thickness of brass .020 for the outer shell of my lid that the tobacco tin was made of. The inner plate was made of .060 and everything was mounted on it so there would be no through holes for the rivets Wanted to make it a side opening box with a hidden hinge. I forged a spring to look like a repurposed frizzen spring to work the catch. Eric Kettenburg used a similiar sliding latch on a box he made.

Couple of other photos I found. The first picture is of a kick out spring by Valentine Beck in a side opening patchbox he did and where I got the idea Also pictured is the original Dutch Tobacco box that was used for the design. All the paint, finish work and aging was done by Ian Pratt

Ken, that was a nifty use for an old frizzen spring, and a great patch box.  Was that design tapped in using a nail set?  Certainly gave it a unique appearance.
This is the first long rifle that I have seen with the painted surface like that.  Almost like Delft china.  I'll have to do some research on that.
