June COVID rifle match
« on: June 02, 2021, 06:19:23 AM »
It looks like we are going to have a match in June.
To make it just a little different we are going to Africa this time. You will print 9 "Charging Rhino" targets. You will get only 1 shot (off hand at 50 yards) on each target for a total of 9 total shots. Submit your best 3 targets and yes to win you must have submitted 3 targets. Scoring will be as follows: I will measure from center of the hole to center of the "bulls-eye" the total in inches of all 3 targets combined will be your score.
The Rhino target can be downloaded at: MyTargets.com it is something like the 16th target when you start scrolling down. I am including a photo of the target so everyone can see what it looks like.
As this shoot is being put on by "Muskrat Mike" I am going to award a prime Muskrat pelt to the winner.
I am going to the Pacific Primitive Rendezvous in La Grande, Oregon from June 16th -26th. If someone can volunteer to help me out judging the targets and resolving any disputes I would appreciate it very much.
Happy shooting
"Muskrat Mike"

Me too, however my rhinos will not be as colorful. B & W printer.

No worries Daryl what ever color they come out is fine by me. It is way more important that we get at least a few of us to shoot those darn pesky rhinos!

Yeah
I agree wholeheartedly. I've heard they were becoming invasive in some areas of North America.

I too have only a b & w printer, and the targets come out fine except the red circles are a very faint grey.  I shall colour in the dot and perhaps one more ring, so that the contest is in the shooting and not the seeing.

I printed out my 9 targets in color. The rings are a faint pink. I think I will aim at the beard, I think it will be more visible at 50 yards. Think I will staple them up in groups of three. Hope to get to them after club shoot tomorrow.

Same here, but if you print them in black, it's lightly better.
My old colour printer had the option, maybe yours does as well.

I just printed them out. Only have a b/w printer. They came out fine except you cant make out the rings or nose dot. I put a round orange sticker where the nose dot should be. Its a little smaller than original dot. Hope that is ok.

Tilefish, whatever it takes to get the job done. Highlighters, stickies, or felt pens. As long as the targets are shot at 50 yards offhand I don't much care. The picture of the target lying on a table was just an example of what the target looked like.

Ok, it looks like no one wants to shoot this match. However I figured if Mike went to the trouble of concocting a match, I would shoot it. Shot it today after a 7 target rifle and 1 10 shot pistol match at Patoka Valley Long rifles.  I posted 4 targets on the carboard as that is all that would fit.
I was using a .45 cal. flintlock rifle with a Douglass XX barrel. My load was 70 grains of Schuetzen 3f powder, .451 balls and Jo Ann's pocket drill, lubed with bear oil. I only shot 4 targets because I was spent and didn't have any desire to shoot any more. I put black poster board behind the targets so the holes could be seen. These are my best three.

Takes some imagination to shoot this target.
from left to right, 5/8, 2 1/8, 1 3/8 for a total of 4 1/8

God spare me the day, but were I in such a situation for real, I fear I would end up as a hood ornament on that angry rhino.

I'll be shooting this match...even though it looks like I'll be shooting it in the rain  :)
I should have 3 best targets by Tuesday.  Also have more smoothbore shooting to do !

Well I gave it a go today. Was harder than I thought It was going to be in more ways than one. I forgot my starter so had to load all shot's with just the rammer. Also started raining half way through the shoot. But it was still a lot of fun. Was shooting a 54cal with 10oz denim patch and 90gr of 3f mink oil lube.

If you shoot and post the targets please take a measurement from the center of the bullseye to center of the hole on each target (to the nearest 1/8th inch). Add them together and post the total in you posting. Thanks "Muskrat Mike"

I shot 4 of my targets today and can't for the life of me figure out what's going on.  My .54 rifle which I've had for years , was shooting 4 inches low or more on all 4 targets. I switched to my 100 yard sight picture after 2 targets, and it made almost no difference at all  :(  Extremely hot and humid today, but I can't see that making the much of a difference !

Maybe you've developed a little muzzle droppy?  Shoot a few off the bench or a good solid rest to confirm your sight picture Bob!

Thanks Taylor.  I just had a thought [ !!!! miraculous !  ]    Perhaps the humidity we've experienced here for the last while has affected the powder in my horn .

Bob, I doubt that humidity has affected the powder in your horn.  But anything's possible.

Your funny on "a thought" reminded me of my daughter.  We were on a trip going somewhere and there was a question raised.  I said, "I have an idea!"  My younger daughter piped up, "the first one's always the hardest Dad."  Cheeky.
