B Sharp,

looks like it might be from something I'd shoot  ;D

I use what was called "Old Durable"  Spar varnish, linseed and turpentine. That is my usual go to? Put on, let soak, wipe off... rinse and repeat with longer drying times in-between each coat.. get it  to where you want it to be and be done. Not overly shiny but not flat either..

went back and found this, from a previous discussion of finishes..

An Old Durable Stock Finish

Fred Miller

The finish and method of application is old. Just when it originated, I don't know. Is it period correct? The ingredients (except for the substitution of marine spar rather than just a spar varnish) are period correct, and certainly the method is as well. If you're looking for a "quick and dirty" finish, then read no further. This finish can be applied to finished wood, as long as the finish is an oil base and was not waxed.

Before applying any finish, the stock should be free of dirt and grime, should be "silk" smooth, and should have been stained with an oil based stain. I will assume that you know how to properly prepare the stock, including lifting the grain twice, etc., before applying the stain.

In a glass jar that has a tight lid, mix equal volumes of any marine spar varnish and boiled linseed oil. Add 1/2 volume turpentine. You don't need to mix up a lot of finish, as a small jar will finish more than one rifle. Cut a number of 10"x10" or larger squares of cloth from old 100% white tee-shirts. You'll use these to wipe down the stock. Wipe down the stock with a clean soft white cloth. All applications of the finish are thin, using just enough to cover well. The first 2 or 3 coats should include all inlet areas of the stock. The purpose is to protect it from moisture.

Apply the first coat with your fingers, firmly rubbing the finish into the wood with the grain. Let the stock set for 2 hours. Take one of the folded tee-shirt squares and with the grain, wipe down the stock gently but firmly. Let set for at least 12 hours. Repeat this with 2 more applications. All of the inlet areas of the stock should now be sealed, and application of finish in these areas is complete.

Apply a 4th coat of finish as above, except let it dry for 2 days. Continue the process until you have a smooth, deep, glossy finish. YES! Originals did have a glossy finish! Applying an additional coat of finish every 6 to 12 months will enhance and maintain its durability and beauty indefinitely.

I do thin it with mineral spirits, and spray it on. If I’ll going to add a patina, I do it in this order.
Several coats of Chambers oil as a sealer, 2 coats of spray on spar varnish, when that’s dry, I use a black tinted mixture of spar varnish to darken areas, similar to lamp black, then 2 more coats of spar varnish, followed by the last two coats of Chambers oil to even every thing out.
Makes a beautiful, durable finish.

small patch, what spar varnish do you use?

I use Circa 1850 Tung Oil Finish.  It gives me a satin finish in about 8 applications, cutting back to the wood after around 4 coats.  A satin finish with a hint of gloss amplifies the wood's grain and figure better than a dead flat finish, which is how I would describe yours.  And tung oil finish is virtually waterproof.  I use ScotchBrite pads to reduce the finish and remove the "orange peel" that occurs after multiple applications, and often burnish with OOOO steel wool between coats.  Each coat must be completely dry and hard prior to attacking with abrasive.  All that comes away is dust.

Is this the Jamestown?

I think it’s called Old Master, or something similar. I’m away from home now, but I can check this weekend.

Circa 1850 is made in Quebec.  I'm in British Columbia, but their product is available here.  I buy it by the gallon.  Is Jamestown in the Carolinas?  there may be an American distributor for the product who puts his name and residence on the can.

Metalshaper, Marine Spar Varnish, Gloss? Semi Gloss?

Thanks for the formula.

I always go for a semi gloss.. like other applications and types of finish,, a lil hit with 4-0 or a fine scotch-brite and
you can tone down any sheen if that happens. if you've seen pics of my Muley or the other rifle with DS triggers  ;) ;) ;)
they both have old durable on them..

No Idea why the oil? I saw this finish mentioned years ago on the MLML ( some will remember ) I tried it and liked it. I was able to layer/control the
appearance and it worked for me..

I checked, and I’ve used both Old Master, and Helmsman spar.  I have a small detail sprayer for the spar varnish, an air brush for the patina areas.

Not to brag but I knew exactly which "Jamestown" you were thinking of.  Last time I checked we could get the very same finish as Taylor favors here in the states.  I just haven't sprung for any yet.

It gives the advantages of varnish in a penetrating wipe on finish.

That's the stuff. The first one posted above by duca at https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/product-detail/1687 looked more like a marine spar varnish, with the inclusion of tung oil.
It most likely would work well, too.

The first one, is a marine grade varnish with tung oil in it.
The second is the 1850 tung oil Taylor spoke of.  I've used the tung oil
as well as the 1850 Danish oil with tung oil which is similar.
The Marine Varnish with the addition of Tung Oil is more like spar varnish - I assume,
due to it's "Marine Grade".
I also assume the Marine Varnish will be shinier.

And the Atlantic is a bit salty, and an oxy-acetylene torch is a bit hot, the South Pole a bit chilly.

Not to worry tho, like a tire, it is only flat on one side.

And very easily fixed.

Update,

I rubbed down the finish and Watco Satin Wax. Has a bit of a shine, but smooths out well.

But, I have several pages of Recipes saved.

Thanks to all for you help and suggestions!
