Bill,
I really enjoy all of your videos, but I’m really glad you posted #64.  I am always having that exact same problem with front sights (too loose and/or gap between blade and barrel).

Thanks,
Jay

Oh- came back this evening and had thought I replied similar to BSharp.
I don't see my post, maybe never made it.
Keep up the good work, Bill.
That electric graver is really neat. I've never seen one in operation before. Thanks.

Cool, Bill. Becoming pretty fancy for a single shot elephant gun.
Frances Selous used a single shot 4 bores (a pair of shortened Dutch fowlers) for elephant for a few years.

I'm not sure how far behind your posts are. Have you fired this rifle yet?

I have fired it a number of times. It handles the recoil much better than I expected it to. So far the heaviest load I have fired is 450 grains of ffg powder. The recoil knocks me back 5 or 6 feet, but it is not painful. It does not give you a concussion or detached retina. It will not spin you around at all. It will not give you an incurable flinch. I have never gotten a bruised shoulder from it. I actually enjoy shooting it. Last video in this series comes out this weekend. Shooting video also.

Bill, 16 1/2 drams is a wee bit more than normal, I would think, with 10 to 12 drams (273gr. to 328gr.) being likely "good enough".  It is your rifle, though - best wishes.

The English Design certainly does handles recoil well, and the rifle design will be better than Selous' fowlers.

Commercially made 4 bore cartridges had a standard charge of 14 drams. They also sold the heavy load cartridges with a 16 dram powder charge. Some hunters were known to use up to 20 drams in muzzleloaders. I am certainly on the heavy side, but still well below what was historically used. Shooting it pretty much feels like a normal rifle up to about 12 drams. Once you get above that the recoil has a totally different feel than what you get with any normal size gun. It is not just more, but different. I will probably give 18 drams a try next year.
