Soddy Derby - late entry
« on: June 21, 2021, 01:51:59 AM »
I can't let Dan have a Soddy Derby without at least 2 entries.   ;)  So maybe it's a little late out of the blocks but here's Soddy Derby entry #2.  There's no mistaking that long straight tang.

This is what I call an "Also Ran" entry.  Just hoping to stumble across the line with a respectable finish.   ;D

;) ;)... Ken,... was good to meet you in Knoxville,... wish we could have visited longer,... certain that you will have an authentic build, as you are in the right area,... maybe something in the water there might contribute to the proper Soddy look,... !!! ... will she be a match rifle, or a light hunting rifle,...? ... keep posting progress,... regards,... Angus,
I hope some of Master Bookout's teaching stuck!

Mr. Fiddler,
It was good meeting you too.  I enjoyed chatting.  It's going to be a light .40 cal. Hunting rifle.  I'll do my best to make it look right.

Good start, Bro.
Do you rekkin the old guys put machine screws thru tang to the triggers like Hawken did, maybe for the same reason?
We are watching and cheering you on.
Best regards Dave  8) 8)

Dave,

One machine screw to the trigger plate and 2 wood screws on a Soddy from what I have seen.   I have also learned not to be absolute about anything on these guns.

Cheers,
Ken

Well this is going to be interesting indeed. The Soddy hunting guns I have seen. All original. Didn't have a tang screw to the trigger plate.
Maybe the chunk guns did. But then again never say never.
That long tang an butt plate plus cheek piece area. Makes them stand out.  Oldtravler

Oldtravler,

I'm sure you are correct.  No argument from me.  In fact the original I have does have 3 screws.  I'm probably lumping too many different schools together in my head.

Cheers,
ken

Ken have no doubt some builder did it. But as thin a wrist area as these hunting guns are. You just wonder how strong the wrist area would be. ?
But back to for it if ya want. It is your gun.  Oldtraveler
