I was wrong about the name of the fabric company.
Old timers memory sucks!!
It's named Ulster Linen, and it's located in Islip, Long Island.
https://www.ulsterlinen.comIt's the same company that I dealt with back in the day. I spoke to a woman named Yoselin who gave me the following information.
Her email address is yoselin@ulsterlinen.com
They did not sell to private individuals back when I spoke with them years ago, but that has changed, and currently Ulster Linen sells to the general public through its website.
A swatch book, priced at $58.00, includes samples of everything that Ulster Linen sells.
Swatch cards, with 10-15 samples per card, are priced at $4.00. This is what I sent for, and received, back in the day. A swatch card for the heavier weights of linen upholstery fabrics. If I recall correctly, the weights started at approximately 9 oz., and went up to approximately 17 oz.
Best pricing will be for orders totalling 55 yards, and greater. Average length on a bolt of upholstery weight linen fabric is 20-25 yards. Bolts may be purchased at 1/4 yard, 1/2 yard, and 3/4 yard lengths.
Of course, any length may be purchased if one is willing to pay the much higher cost at the single yard price.
Obviously, a group purchase is the best way to keep costs down. Back when I first contacted Ulster Linen I was working, and was going to just spring for a 55 yard purchase, figuring to sell some of the linen off to local seamstresses to offset the cost. This is first class fabric, with tight weaves, easily able to withstand the stress of being used for patching material.
Back in the early 2000's when I was researching linen prices, I spent several weeks online searching for the best pricing. This is the company I ended up with. I have no idea if it's still good information, but what I found out back then was that these people had established direct ties to the manufacturers in Europe back in the 20's & 30's that allowed them to import directly into the United States for less money than most other companies.
Edit: The 10th paragraph above should have read......
Bolts can be purchased at 1/4 bolt, 1/2 bolt, and 3/4 bolt lengths. Not yard as I wrote above.
