17th Century plus odds and ends all rough.
« on: June 28, 2021, 03:35:31 AM »
Have y'all seen this?  More than one oldie. Don't know how much this guy knows outside of his books.

Okay the link got nipped.

There's a video on FB under Hershel's stuff... Many of you can find it.  Hershel House Longrifles and Such: Mike Sandone post yesterday 6 June at 6:32pm

Couple of screenshots I pulled from the video-way more info in the video. No offense meant to that fellow, but I think some of you fellows likely know more about these guns than he.

Could use a little restoration work.

A restorer's dream, that is for sure. Lots of good early material there! Thank you for bringing it in Wade though it may give some folks heartburn.

Having crossed swords with a museum curator once while representing a client, I think he has what would be referred
to as 'historical artifacts'.

What reference book did he use to identify his 'historical artifact' as a club butt New England Fowler?  An interesting find, even in that condition.

The book he was using is "Flintlock Fowlers" by Tom Grinslade.

When magnifying the 'octagon' Fowler barrel (with a rear sight) it appears that the barrel has a round profile on the bottom and the octagon profile on the sides and top only.  Unusual for a octagon barrel, or shaped like that by the builder for convenience?

If you can get on FB and look at the video you could probably get better stills than those few screenshots I snapped. Info in the top post as to where the video is found.

That was quite commonly done. It was far easier to inlet the round profile.
