Third Build Finally Done
« on: July 02, 2021, 01:43:04 PM »
Finally finished this one up just in time for July 4th. It was built from a Virginia Rifle precarve and parts set from Knob Mountain Muzzleloaders. It has a .50 caliber Rice barrel, Chambers Colonial Virginia Lock. The stain and finish is Kibler’s Iron Nitrate and Tannic Acid with Tried and True Varnish Oil on top. I am still a novice, having assembled a Kibler Colonial kit and a Chambers Early York kit prior to starting this one. Working my way up in difficulty and hope to be able to build from a blank eventually. I made lots of mistakes and got lots of good advice from people on this site along the way. Criitique is welcome.

Thank you.
Jay

P.S.
Sorry for the amateur photography.

What I can see looks good.  I would have slimmed down the comb some more.

Jay,   Looks to me like the next one ought to be from a slab. There's nothing to be intimidated about when starting from a slab. It's actually easier in my opinion, much more freedom to do what you want.

Looks good. I like the pin escutcheons. And you did a good job with the stain and finish.

Nice job buddy.  I like the shop as well,  lots of room to work safely.  I didn't see the bandsaw anywhere,  only kidding,  well 1/2 kidding,  no seriously.  Best of luck on your next venture.  Among the best advice I received from the folks on this wonderful site is "  begin the slab and get your mistakes over with."  I think Craig offered that good advice.

What do you use the forceps for?

I used the forceps to hold onto screws and bolts while I fire blued the heads using a small propane torch.

Thank you to everyone for your comments and complements. I do want to try a build from a blank at some point, but I would like to watch someone shape a buttstock from a blank first. I tend to learn these things by watching either in person or via video better than by looking at still pictures in a book. Does anyone know of any good videos for sale showing the shaping of a buttstock from a blank?

Thanks,
Jay

Very nice looking rifle, Jay.  Pioneer Video has one of Mark Silver shaping a stock from a blank that I believe you’d find very helpful.  Best,
