[Cades Cove Fiddler]

..... Steven Gibson (1812-1860) was the first known of a family of gunsmiths from the Boyd's Creek area of Sevier Co. Tennessee,... this family made and repaired longrifles from Steven's first build up until the passing of his grandson Wiley Gibson in 1948,... I recently became aware of a Steven Gibson longrifle that has never been on public display,... just thought you might like to see a few photos,.. cannot get enough of these Tennessee long guns,... !!! ... C.C.F. That Gibson clan must have been quite well off. You’ll never see early pictures of my ancestors with those tall boots with the tops in tact. They were all cut off like Lil’ Abner’s so the tops could be used to make brogans for the little children. In fact my family still has a little pair of home made shoes made from boot tops.

Comparing the rear entry thimble of this rifle with the same in the old photograph of Wiley, they would appear to be by the same maker. Perhaps, it just the photo, but the rear sight has a VERY thin notch. Definitely for "young" eyes! Would love to know additional details such as barrel length,, diameter, caliber, and closeups of rib, rib attachment, thimbles, etc. Wonderful SMR! Thanks for sharing!
