I'm presently working on some scrimshaw on a medium sized horn. Currently penciling in a $#*! horse on one side. There are 2 different horns in the Dresslar book with $#*! horses attributed to two different makers. Also a 3rd in and on the cover of the Grinslade book. I didn't see where it was attributed to any maker but could have missed it.
Given the group of known $#*! horses on period powder horns accredited to different makers would suggest that obviously it was a known image (Greek/Roman in origin)...but the images themselves are strikingly similar. Is there a known common image that these guys could have used for reference from a period document?

In other words "the snake" by Ben Franklin was published in the Pennsylvania Gazette...it has been used as reference on countless items. I find the similarities in the $#*! horses to suggest something similar...I haven't been able to find it and curious if I just missed it.

That's just how it posted,..call it a heck horse if need be. Just assumed the site had filters on it to keep it family friendly, I didn't try and change it.

I've also heard of these referred to as NyteMares and Night Mares.

Go to the horn guild website and scroll down to articles from archives. Billy Griner did a research paper on griffons or $#*! horses. Should help

Aaron,

Billy's article is the best research on the Hellhorse image that I have found. Richard Cresey used it on 11 of his 12 known horns. Although I researched Cresey's horns and the Hellhorse image for about a decade I never found a "source" of the image. Like you I believe one probably existed but may now be lost.

John,..that pretty much answers my question. I appreciate your response and I'll take a look at that article next week. If I ever get to be a retired man I'll add finding the "Original hellhorse image" to my bucket list. If I run into any of you guys in the basement of some courthouse in Massachusetts you'll know what I'm looking for. It's interesting as to the value that I would place on that knowledge. My be Greek and Roman mythology but if you look at other culture around the world even back to cave drawings you will see in one form or another but very similar horses and dragons. Think about it could a guy in Japan have seen an example of a Dragon carved in what is now South America. The dragon that is common although fantasy almost always flies, breaths fire, have a tail and scales. The drawings of horses follows about the same so I don't see the combining of the two as something that was done by one person or group. They just evolved as needed over time, maybe to put fear in some or show power.

Moving along on this Demon-Steed, it was on my to do list and enjoying the project. Only the outline has 1st pass of ink at the moment...all of the details in the neck, wings, tail area are only penciled and scribed. Still have some details to pencil in and scribe before adding some more ink.
Horn was made by Bill Smith quite a few years ago.

Started reading, trying to figure out if we had a new breed of horse, or what. Turned out, $#*! horses IS a breed, and one that I don't particularly want to come into contact with except through art.

One of my Amish friends had an experience with $#*! horses when he was operating his tedder, a wide machine that turns the hay over to dry thoroughly.

His wheel horse hit the electric fence, and turned into a $#*! horse almost immediately! My friend got tossed from the seat, and was hanging on to the reins to avoid getting swept up by the tedder. He finally got torn loose, and the machine went over him, giving him a compound fracture of his right humerus.

Three big Belgians and one $#*! horse can sure move fast!

Told him next time he put on a rodeo out in the hay field to sell tickets beforehand.

A little update on the other side of the horn. Owner wasn't sure of what he would like so I spit out a few ideas. This is a rhyme that I really like and has been on my to do list and he settled on it. It is off of a 1776 horn..the heck horse is 1760...they're at least roughly the same time period. When I started working on the horn the owner's guidance was simply something of early revolution subject matter.
