Interesting style. What kind of rifle would this be?

I initially thought it was some variety of Mahogany, but I believe you are correct with the Oak guess...Ron

Looks like walnut to me.
Really like the patch box and the engraving you will be doing to it!

Maybe a light colored Walnut. Regardless, it looks like it will be a very nice rifle when you get through. Thanks for sharing.

Stock is from a walnut blank. It will be a lot darker when the finish hits it.

Some walnut can run lighter in shade.  Or it could be Butternut, which has the nickname of “white walnut”.  It’s not really that light, just lighter than normal walnut. They are very similar looking trees (and nuts) with similar properties, other than the shade of the wood , and Butternut being a little less hard on average. It is often sold unknowingly as walnut.  Nice work on the gun.

Someone asked for an update. Here’s how the patterns shown above turned out. Sorry, I am a poor photographer.

Very nice work! I especially like the horse head. Who would have thought that a few lines would make such a simple but beautiful image. I always overthink things. I probably would have tried to use a lot of shading lines and messed it up.

Are you willing to share more pics of the finished rifle?  I really like the little bit we can see!  I'm very interested in the completed patch box.

I will, as soon as it assembled, in the next few days. This piece will be offered for sale, as well. Thanks for your interest.
