Pistol Kit Recommendations
« on: July 21, 2021, 10:43:40 PM »
All,
I am looking to build my first flintlock pistol kit. I have completed three rifle kits now, one each from Kibler, Chambers and Knob Mountain Muzzleloaders. Does anybody have any recommendations for a good pistol kit for a first timer? I am leaning toward a Chambers kit, but am open to suggestions. If anybody has any completed pistol kit pics they want to share, it would be helpful as well. Also, if anyone knows of a kit that uses a Chambers Queen Anne round faced lock, all the better, as I am particularly fond of the Colonial VA locks on two of the three rifle builds mentioned above.

Thanks in advance.
Jay

Muzzleloader Builders Supply  (they're on the web) sells a bunch of pistol kits, some based on colonial types & others from Europe if interested in overseas firelocks. Thats all I know about MLS pistols, never saw one, only pics, they're good to deal with.. got stuff Track wolf & others don't.   old dog

Another kudo from me, Bill.  Lovely to look at, probably a bundle of fun out at the range.

If you’ve done 3 kits, mow might be a great time to build one from a plank.  A pistol would be a good place to start.  A lot less to lose if you screw up.

Dane, I agree with you about maybe it's time to start from a plank. You're right about having less to lose, but a pistol can be a real PIA. They have everything that a long gun has except it's compressed into a much smaller space.

The pictures of the pistol you posted Bill are very nice.
Jay the first thing I will ask you, is what are your intentions for the pistol?  Is it target shooting, Hunting, Just because you don't have one, or a pistol to complement a rifle or fowler you already have?
How you answer this is essential to your enjoying what you build.

Alacran,
It will probably be used for target shooting at the range and as a display piece along with an Early Virginia rifle I recently completed. I am thinking Chambers English pistol would go well with it.

Thanks,
Jay

I second the recommendation for Cabin Creek's pistol kit.

Yeah, for that very reason, I really dislike building pistols.
I just meant losing less on the wood.

Cabin Creek has a really nice kit like others have said. If I were to buy one it would be theirs.

That's the one I was trying.  I checked their Facebook too and the mentioned server issues back in the beginning of July.  Sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread, I was silently watching (thinking a similar build) and wanted to check them out.

Actually, I’ve thought they have a virus in the past as I’ve tried to go to their website and got redirected to some gambling site or something like…..

Avoid that site for now.  I just went to look and it's one of those "  wait one moment" and then a screen shows up and says " download the latest version of..."  I've always had trouble once those screens show,  definitely a problem and a hijacked site for now.  Too bad,  but not worth the bologna that ensues.  Avoid a headache.

Just give them a phone call.  I called Brad  recently and purchased one of his worm and ball screw sets , and he mentioned the problem with the website.  I'm sure he could e-mail you any info you wanted re the pistol kit

I8th or 9th cabin creek.  Brad tunes each lock and many of the parts are cast by them.  This pistol is styled after an original Sees that Brad worked on.  He'll be glad to tell you all about it if you call him.  A lot more inletting than a kibler for sure.  Here are pics of mine.  I kept it simple.

That looks really nice! A fine companion for a Kibler!
