Vincent Rifling Bench

Sometimes when visiting a museum it seems that the curator gets it wrong when displaying old guns.  However, at the Campus Martius museum in Marietta, Ohio they truly got it right.  A wonderful display of quite a few Vincent rifles along with a good number of his shop tools.  This was put together by Bill Reynolds, a very knowledgeable guy who is also an excellent gun builder.  That said, here are some photos of the Vincent rifling bench now on display, go and see this.











An interesting feature is that the rifling cam has few grooves.  The indexing head has a disk that can be rotated to 7 positions to cut a typical 7 groove barrel.  This allows the bench cam to be a lot easier to make, my bench cam has the full 7 grooves - a lot more work when compared to the Vincent bench, he must have been quite a brilliant thinker.  The indexing head can be removed and replaced, I assume by a head that cuts a different number of grooves.

That place looks really cool, I will have to check it out one day. I have had the pleasure of seeing and handling a good number of Ohio rifles and they don't get the credit they're due, especially the percussion half stocks. Such a sleek, fast, and handy rifle. Relatively light as well. But I see a lot of people fetishize the Hawken but thumb their nose at the Ohio, I don't understand that.

There are many of us who feel similarly about Ohio rifles, that's why we started the Association of Ohio Long rifle Collectors almost 46 years ago. We meet annually in Marietta at the Lafayette Hotel the first weekend in April. 2022 will be April 1&2 as well as a smaller show in the Fall. If you like Ohio's come to Marietta and see several hundred in one place.

Thank you, I will have to check it out, it seems Marietta is the place to be regarding the field. I've been meaning to join them, I have a friend who's a member. Do you know when Ohio Gunsmiths & Allied Tradesmen - Volume 6 is getting released?

Regarding volume 6. The latest offering is almost ready for the printer as we speak. It will not be a 6th volume but a free standing coffee table type of offering. Sooner than later we hope, will post when it's available.

I like the way the rifling guide indexes.
 I made mine solid, and rifled my barrel in the round before I put the flats on it. That way I turned the barrel.
This set up much better!
