Big Desert Patch & Wad Lube
« on: August 24, 2021, 10:40:19 PM »
Just picked up an 8oz bottle of Big Desert Patch and Wad Lube from Muzzleloader Builders Supply.  Supposed to have properties very similar to sperm whale oil. My intent is to use it as a hunting and target patch lube for my rifles. Anyone try this stuff? How does it work in cold weather?

Please give a review after you try it.

I have read that Jojoba oil is also similar in properties to sperm oil.

Will do! Right now I use Ox Yoke pre-lubed patches. Hopefully I will get a chance to make some smoke in the next couple weeks. Stay tuned...

I've used it for lubing shotgun cushion wads; works great for that.  Never tried it for a patch lube.

Well, I took the 1841 Mississippi Rifle (Euroarms) to the range last week. In short, the Big Desert did not seem to work well as a patch lube. I was getting inconsistent patch wear, even had one "smoker" out in the grass.

That said, I may not have been using enough lube. The only "thin" patch lube I use is spit. My usual is more of a cream than liquid, so user error may be the cause here.

I was applying the Big Desert Lube as I shot, perhaps the patch needs to soak in it a bit to become fully saturated. The patches looked lubed, but may not have penetrated enough.

I'm not writing off this product yet, back to the range to learn more!

Hi elkhart. You may want to try googling stumpkillers recipes. Great stuff. Brian PS apply stumpys stuff on the patches you only are going to use that day.
