another bear hide bag, tinder horn and a "pipe" hawk
« on: August 27, 2021, 02:12:36 AM »
It has been absolutely ridiculously hot and humid here for the last 2 1/2 weeks. Relentless .
I can only do outside work until about noon, and then must retire inside for the duration.
2 1/2 weeks of puttering produced a bear hide , ticking lined bag with ankle loomed strap,
a horn tinder box, and a pipe hawk filed out of a Davis casting, heat treated, and handled with a scrap of maple. I'm really looking forward to the Fall !!!

Nice Bob!  the braintanned bear skin looks to have some body to it.  It's an open topped bag, n'est pas?

Yes. Open topped.  The bear hide , was brain tanned, worked and worked over a stake, then smoked and worked some more. Very tough stuff. Definitely not the "chamois" result I get with deer hides.
