octagonal scrapers
« on: September 03, 2021, 04:14:57 AM »
Hi Guys,
I remember someone posting about octagonal barrel channel scrapers a while back, is there a source for them? I know Brownell's carries them but they are and have been out of stock. I can probably make one pretty easy but I was wondering if there is a source for them?
Thanks,
Rob

Rob, the one that I am looking at right now has a 15/16" octagon, made by Gunline.  And they only do business with a check or PMO.  It is a husband and wife business in Brea, CA.  www.gunline.com  2950 Saturn St, Brea, CA 92821 · (714) 993-5100

I believe that he offers them in several sizes, I have the 15/16" and a 7/8".  They are very good scrapers - three blades on a 90* handle.  They fasten on with an Allen head bolt, with an aligning pin, and spacers between the three blades.  And yes, it is possible to sharpen the blades if necessary.

They are well known for their checkering tools, which are also sold by Brownell's.

Order straight from Gun Line. http://www.gunline.com/inletting.html. I have made them also, a single cutter scrapper. I cut a piece of good flat steel the profile of half the octagon, heat treat and put a slight bevel with belt sander and add a handle. I will send a picture later.

Hi Rob,

I needed some of these back a few months ago. I wound up going to the hardware store and buying some appropriate sized spade woodworking bits. I brought them home and ground the point and corners off and bent the end in a 90. Then I sharpened the bottoms and put handles on them. They worked out really well and from what I have seen at Brownells, you have to change all the scrapers on to one handle.  I am somewhat of a knife maker, so I have a forge and a nice grinder. That was a big help, but not a necessity.

Thats a good idea I hadn't thought of that. I have a machine shop and some spare steel I was thinking of making something.

I did something similar.  I made one out of a chisel.  I bent the end over and made the octagon contour I wanted.  I then heat treat and sharpened.  I like the spade bit idea, I will try it.  The mass of the chisel and shape may give a little more control and less chatter.
